ledbury swim trunks

ledburyswim

don’t worry, it’s not too late in the summer for a new pair of trunks.  if you’re a fan or ledbury (and even if you’re not), you need to check out their new hilliard swim trunks.  there’s a nice little story about the idea behind the swim trunks that can be found here on their blog.  but if you’re not into reading, then know that they’re not too baggy and not too slim, they’re made of nylon, and they hit slightly above the knee.  what more do you need in a swim trunk?  you can cop a pair here.

essential: swiss army pocket knife

i’ve had my swiss army pocket knife since i was a sophomore in high school.  i had the classic red one before this one, but was forced to throw it away upon entering a lynyrd skynyrd concert (i’m sure security confiscated much worse that night).  my dad never leaves home without his.  he’s always the hero when someone has a loose string on their jacket or shirt or needs help cutting ribbon on christmas.  i’m not saying you need to carry one at all times, but it’s essential to have one close by during the holidays when you need a little extra to open that well-taped package.  they also make great stocking stuffers.

mackinaw cruiser vs the irvine jacket

the new j. crew catalog arrived sometime last week.  thumbing through it i noticed a jacket eerily similar to the filson mackinaw cruiser.  j. crew is calling it the irvine jacket (bottom pic).  it’s essentially the exact same jacket as filson’s.  it’s wool with chest flap pockets, handwarmer pockets, and buttons at the cuff.  it doesn’t look half bad, but i’d still go for the mackinaw cruiser.  filson’s been making their jacket since 1914;  j. crew since 2011.  no contest here.

barbour on a budget

a couple of weeks ago i received an email from a guy named jake lester.  he was asking my opinion about buying a barbour jacket on ebay.  he specifically wanted to know if i had any tips on how to spot a fake.  one of the easiest ways is the detail on the buttons.  a fake barbour won’t have embossed buttons with the barbour name.  barbour’s website has a few more useful tips if you’re interested in that kind of thing.

he sent me a link to a jacket he wanted to place a bid on.  the seller had sold barbour jackets in the past and had positive feedback.  i told him to go for it.  unfortunately, the jacket was pulled before the auction ended.  bummer.

yesterday afternoon i got another email from jake telling me that he told his mom and grandmother to be on the lookout for anything barbour as they did their antique and thrift shopping (they both own stores).  lo and behold his grandmother found a beaufort in his size for three dollars at one of her routine stops.  she sent him the pictures that you see below.  what an incredible find.  if this doesn’t entice you to step out to your local thrift store every once in a while, then i don’t know what will.  thanks for sharing, jake.

late to the party

at the end of june i bought a pair of the navy waxed nylite tretorns.  i liked ‘em so much that i had to grab a pair of the white ones.  i tried to order them in july, but they were sold out everywhere (blogger tipping point i guess).  zappos reloaded and i pulled the trigger.  i figured i’d start my own little nylite project since i wasn’t invited to their party.  currently i’m the only guest, but that’s ok.  you’re invited too.  i love these shoes.  their inexpensive, comfortable, and look great.

last tretorn post until next summer i promise.

new weejuns

bass weejuns are some of my all time favorite shoes.  i’m now on my third pair in 10 years.  i’ve worn penny loafers since i was a kid, but didn’t consider them cool until i went to new york my junior of college and 4 out of 10 guys we went to dinner with were wearing some form of penny loafer.  when i returned from my trip, i found a pair of burgundy weejuns on the sale rack at whatever department store is now macy’s.  i believe they were $40 at the time.  now they’ll run you a cool $99 on zappos.  i challenge you to find a better shoe for under $100.

(sorry for the below average pictures.  i went a little overboard with my iphone camera filters)

new work shoes

i need a new pair of brown shoes i can wear to work, but can’t decide what to get.  my two options are below.  both would be solid investments.  let me know what you think.

every man needs: a white dinner jacket

with summer in full swing, you’re probably 3-4 weddings deep at this point, and if you’re from the south, then you’ve probably had to wear a tux for most of those.  i actually prefer wearing my tux to weddings because i wear a suit to work every day.  so how do you add a little flavor to your formal wear?  you get yourself a white dinner jacket.

the white dinner jacket first popped up in the the 1920′s as an alternative to the heavy fabric and dark colors of the traditional tuxedo jacket.  wealthy travelers needed something lightweight to take with them to warmer climates, thus creating the need for the white dinner jacket.  most white dinner jackets are made of linen or a very lightweight worsted wool that holds up well in humid environments.  the color is also not technically white but ivory.  they became very popular after humphrey bogart wore one in casablanca (below).

brooks brothers has one on sale right now for $550.  that’s a good chunk of change, but not if you consider it an investment.  every man needs one in his wardrobe sooner or later.

bag it up

it occurred to me last week that i do not have a good way to transport my book, towel, and sunscreen from the house to the beach.  in the past, i’ve used an old northface backpack and it’s worked well, but it gives off a “hey i’m still in college” vibe that i’ve been trying to move past.  i started thinking about what i might need for my next trip to the beach and the answer is a tote bag.  if you think tote bags are girly, then you haven’t been paying attention.  there are plenty of manly options out there that will help you avoid looking like a mom taking her kids to the pool.  here’s a few of my favorites:

the bag above from w.m. j.mills & co is by far my favorite option for the beach.  it doesn’t get any more classic than a two-tone, canvas made bag with a lifetime warranty.

the breakdown: dopp kits

summer is almost here and as we begin to prepare for our vacations, it’s important to point out one thing every man needs: a good dopp kit.  in my opinion, the best ones are made of nylon or canvas and have some sort of waterproof liner that will prevent spills from touching the rest of your suitcase.  remember that no matter how careful you are, something will inevitably spill in your dopp kit.  here are five of my favorites to get you through this summer and next:

filson

jack spade

j. crew
