summer shoes

vanscheck

every summer, i pick a cheap pair of shoes to wear trash.  i spend the summer nights and weekends trying my damnedest to get them dirty.  at the end of the summer, i take pride in the lived-in look that comes from all of the cookouts and trips to the beach and ballpark.  this year, i’m changing it up a bit by adding a pair of checkerboard vans slip-ons to the mix.  they look new and stiff now, but by the time september rolls around, i’m hoping a spin in the washing machine can’t get all the dirt off.  what kicks are you rocking this summer?

the best no show socks on the market

Screen Shot 2013-04-21 at 11.36.07 AM

the weather in nashville was perfect this weekend which means spring no show sock season has officially begun.  i’ve tried almost every no show sock on the market and keep coming back to these: vans canoodle super no show socks (damn! that’s a mouthful).  i stumbled upon them by accident at a vans store in denver 3 or 4 years ago.  i didn’t realize they were technically women’s socks, but it doesn’t matter.  they do the trick.  they don’t bunch up at the toe or slip down your heel when you’re walking.  hands down they are the best no show socks you will find.  give them a shot this spring/summer if you’re looking for something to help keep your feet from being the smelliest on your block.  your lady will thank you.

if you’re a gq reader, then you may have seen these in the latest issue.  if you’re a sneaker freaker, then you most likely caught these in february via kicks on fire (where i jacked these pics.  thanks, guys).  and if you read both, then kudos for you for being awesome.  i missed out on those ball and buck new balances in november, so i’m going to work hard to snag a pair of these when they’re released this summer.

believe the hype: nike flyknit lunar1+ running shoes

photo 2

i’m not the type to get excited about nike shoes releases, but i was online first thing last thursday morning with my credit card in hand ordering a pair of nike flyknit lunar1+ running shoes.  i never updated my free runs, so this was the perfect excuse to buy another pair of lightweight nike kicks, and boy oh boy, am i glad i did.  if you want to know about the technology behind the shoes, you can check it out here.  all you really need to know is that they are extremely comfortable and look amazing (obviously).  now, i just need to order a pair in neon green so people mistake me for an athletic dude when i’m kicking it around town.  nice work, nike.

thoughts on: ball and buck x new balance 574 in mountain green

Ball-and-Buck-x-New-Balance-574-Mountain-Green-01

ball and buck’s collaboration with new balance is back, but this time they’re in “mountain green.”  hmm.  mountain green, eh?  interesting color choice.  i missed out on the grey ones in september and was looking forward to the second chapter of this collaboration.  i figured they’d stick with grey.  in all honesty, i’m not loving these.  the orange really throws me off.  it looks good on the grey kicks, but it’s a stretch here.  these will be available christmas day at ball and buck’s store as well as online.  what do you think about the new colorway?  would you drop $149 for a pair?  i might, but only because i missed the boat on the first ones.

new kicks on the cheap

nb1

as mentioned a couple of times on to take the train, new balance is one of my favorite shoe brands.  you know you’re getting comfort and quality when you purchase a pair of new balance shoes.  lately they’ve been putting out a lot of collaborations and special versions of their popular models to please the sneaker heads and the casual fan.  (ps ball and buck if you read this blog, please hook me up with camo 574s.  i will be your best friend forever.)  not necessarily lost in all of the hype is the classic 574 which you can find pretty much anywhere for under $60.  i was close to pulling the trigger on a new pair of 1400s from j. crew as well as some of the new 998s from kith, but since it’s the holiday season and i shouldn’t be spending money on myself, i went with a cheap pair of 574s from zappos for $51.  i know you’ve seen nb 574s thousands of times, but these look too good not to mention.

the night i met pete townshend

-5

last night i had the good fortune of meeting one of my rock and roll heroes: pete townshend.  he didn’t disappoint.  he spoke to us for a couple of minutes and couldn’t have been any nicer.  being the observant blogger that i am, i noticed his choice of footwear.  he was rocking a pair of burgundy longwings.  i would almost bet my life (the who reference) that they were color 8 cordovan alden longwings, but i wasn’t about to ask or out myself as man that checks out other men’s footwear.

the who played quadrophenia in it’s entirety.  it was truly an unforgettable evening.  pete f**king townshend.  i still can’t believe it.  big thanks to the two gentleman that hooked it up.

here’s an oldie, but goodie of pete and paul weller.  i guess i side with the mods.  can you blame me?  they were much better dressers.

shoe fitting 101

brannock

this may sound ridiculous, but until last week i didn’t know my shoe size.  for those of you that know me, this is no surprise.  i’m constantly buying shoes, wearing them for two days, and then putting them up on ebay.  it’s become a ridiculous and expensive cycle, but a nice one for ebayers that like red wings and aldens.

the week before thanksgiving i called the closest red wing store and had them ship me a new pair of boots.  they didn’t fit.  they were too wide and too short.  i tried to ship them back, but they made me come to the store.  i’m glad i did.  the lady working at the store measured me on red wing’s machine and gave me the bad/good news: i measured an 11a.  i told her she was crazy and that i was 9.5 or a 10.  she then pulled out the brannock device and that’s when things clicked.  Read more

new balance 990 30th anniversary edition

the new balance 99x series is the reason i love new balance shoes.  i bought my first pair in 8th grade after discovering that all phish-loving college students wore these to shows (not embarrassed to admit that detail).  since then, i’ve been a loyal new balance customer with a penchant for 574s as well as many other models (1400s, 420s, u455s, 1300s, etc).  i was very pleased to see their latest press release.  on december 1st, new balance is releasing the 30th anniversary edition of their 990 shoe which is made in the usa and true to the original 1982 shoe.  only 990 pairs will be available at select new balance retailers i.e. you can’t buy them online.  “on a scale of 1000, this shoe is a 990.”

new balance cm1600 in heritage blue

if you’re a hypebeast reader, then you probably saw these the other day.  if you’re not, then you’re probably seeing them for the first time and that’s ok too.  i owned a pair of 1600s in college, but in “frat” grey (not really a color, but all dudes in fraternities have grey new balance shoes at some point in their college career).  i like this heritage blue color a lot better.  you can buy your very own pair at kitch nyc.  time to start working on my fall shoe game.
