the shock the world sport coat

i thought last sunday’s episode of mad men was one of the best (don’t worry there are no spoilers ahead).  at the beginning of the episode, don is asked by pete’s wife, trudy, to go to their house in the suburbs for dinner.  don has every intention of declining the invitation, but trudy won’t take no for an answer.  before they head to the ‘burbs, megan convinces don to wear the new sport coat she bought for him which turns out to be a very un-don draper looking coat.

it’s strange to see don in something other than dark grey or dark blue, but this is the theme of the season: don’s a changed man.  if megan wants him to shock the internet world by wearing a loud, plaid coat then by god don’s going to do it and i don’t blame him.  i might be in the minority here, but i really like don’s “shock the world” sport coat – it’s 2012′s answer to 2011′s “go to hell” pants.  and while i’m at it, i think we should have more dinner parties where jackets are required.  i just hope my guests would show up.

jessica pare “zou bisou bisou”

i’m sure most of you watched mad men last sunday night.  thank god it’s back on the air.  i missed it a ton.  one of the things i’m looking forward to this season is the evolution of jessica pare’s character, megan draper.  she was excellent in the first episode.  unlike don, i was impressed with her singing the 1960′s song “zou bisou bisou.”  gq.com has a nice write-up on the origin of the song if you want to check it out.  and as if mad men couldn’t get any cooler, they’ve released a 7 ” of her performance which you can find here (it’s also on itunes but that’s not as cool as an actual record).  welcome back, mad men.

wes anderson for hyundai

i don’t do a ton of videos on to take the train, but these two wes anderson spots for hyundai are worth watching.  wes anderson’s vison and directing combined with jeff bridges’ voice over pack a nice punch for the south korean car company.  i’m not going to rush out and buy a hyundai, but i certainly won’t be judging you if you do.

“talk to my car”

“modern life”

new crush

anne hathaway hosted snl last night and was great.  her impression of katie holmes was spot on.  she also looked cute doing it.  i could maybe be persuaded to go see her new movie.  i hear there’s a little bit of nudity in it.  not bad.

lea michele on conan

my newest crush, lea michele, was on conan’s first show this past monday night.  i thought she looked excellent.  welcome back, conan.

nucky

steve buscemi is a rare talent.  he’s not an incredibly attractive guy, but he is an incredibly talented actor.  i feel like people have been scared to cast him as a lead for that reason, so i’m glad he’s finally getting his due.  i’ve blogged about ad nauseum about how great i think boardwalk empire is so i’ll spare you today.  i love this guy.

new crush: kelly macdonald

if you watch boardwalk empire then you know what i’m talking about.  kelly plays the widow margaret schroeder.  it’s definitely not the clothes that make her so damn appealing on the show.  it might be the accent or maybe it’s her character.  i can’t explain it, but there’s something so sexy about the way she portrays a poor, scottish widow falling under the charms of the rich boss of the town nucky thompson.  she cleans up good too.  i’m already looking forward to next week.

lea michele wants to meet you by the lockers

i don’t watch glee and i probably never will, but i do know who lea michele is.  she’s everywhere right now.  it’d be hard to miss her.  i remember seeing a picture of her in a rolling stone article a couple of months ago and trying to decide if she was hot or not.  i then read the article.  she reminded me of so many girls that do drama in high school.  they all have that i’m-gonna-go-to-new york-and-be-a-big-star-one-day attitude.  it’s like this uber-confidence that even the high school jocks don’t have.  lea definitely has that along with a chip on her shoulder.  it’s kind of awesome.  it’s actually kind of sexy.  i read a quote from her the other day talking about how all the girls in her high school got nose jobs and how she needed one the most.  she obviously didn’t get one and that’s one of the reasons she’s so appealing.  she seems real.  i’m glad in interviews she doesn’t just say how excited and blessed she is to have success right now.  she knew it was coming.  i welcome her success too, because her spread in gq is pretty hot.

can’t wait for sunday

sunday used to be my least favorite day of the week.  in grade school, i would spend most sundays terrified of school the next day.  there was also never any good tv on.  in college, i began obsessing over professional football.  i was a college football fan first and foremost but then someone introduced me to gambling and fantasy football.  that was the beginning of the end.  now after a full day of football i have what’s arguably the best tv lineup of all time.  boardwalk empire, mad men, eastbound & down, and one another show that i’m too embarrassed to mention i watch.  i already can’t wait until this weekend is almost over.

boardwalk empire

last night was the premiere of hbo’s new drama boardwalk empire.  i’ve never been a big tv person, but i feel like we’ve hit the prime time (pun intended) of television shows.  a good series to me is becoming more enjoyable than a good movie thanks to mad men, breaking bad, the wire, and several others.

last night’s episode was directed by martin scorsese who sets the tone for the rest of the season.  set in prohibition-era atlantic city, boardwalk empire gives us a glimpse at the start of organized crime in new jersey (kind of like the sopranos except the set is a little more interesting and the clothes are much nicer).  i’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes.

ps nucky thompson, played by the excellent steve buscemi, is a great name for a character.  nice work writers.
