weekly six pack vol 6

i figured i’d sneak my weekly six pack in here before time ran out.  “popular” is a song from lil wayne’s new album i am not a human being. i love the hook and there’s also a line about chris johnson.  i put another avett brother’s tune in the six pack because we were supposed to go see them last night.  i’ve heard mixed reviews on the show, so i’m not too upset we missed it.  the third song by the dodo’s is called “fables.”  a friend of mine brought a boombox to the golf course last weekend and it came on his ipod.  i forgot how good it was.  “you’re gonna kill that girl” by the ramones would be on any halloween playlist i would make.  “magdalena” is a tune off of brandon flowers new record.  i know a million reasons why i shouldn’t like his music, but who cares.  the last track is “mine” from taylor swift.  her new record is good.  i’m not kidding.  if you don’t believe then check out the new rolling stone.  4 stars.  seriously.

meet the new balance for j. crew collection

i finally ordered my new balance for j.crew kicks last week.  they shipped on friday.  i’ll post some pics and fit answers as soon as they come in.  i know you’re looking forward to that.  in the meantime, watch this short video on the collaboration.  it’s great to see how much craftsmanship new balance puts into their shoes.

coming to nashville july 2011

u2 is coming to nashville july 2, 2011.  this is a dream come true for me.  i lucked out and got some great presale tickets.  i’ve seen u2 3 times and i’d recommend you seeing them before they retire.  it’s an incredible live show.  i wasn’t a fan before i saw them live and now i’m a super fan.  it’s a long wait until july but it will be well worth it.  get tickets by any means necessary.

happy halloween

i’m very sorry for the lack of posts this week.  my computer died on monday morning and i’m just now up and running again.  if you’re looking for a good halloween movie, watch shaun of the dead.  it’s not really scary but is the perfect mixture of zombies and comedy.  what more could you ask for?  happy halloween.

f**k yeah menswear

f**k yeah menswear is this weeks greatest tumblr ever and for good reason.  it’s hilarious and spot on.  today they ripped take ivy.  the saddest part of reading it is identifying certain blogs i look at.  dude’s got it down perfect.  the word “crispy” should never have been used to describe a person’s dress in the first place.  it’s ridiculous.  i’m hoping to see a post regarding kanye soon.

new crush: kelly macdonald

if you watch boardwalk empire then you know what i’m talking about.  kelly plays the widow margaret schroeder.  it’s definitely not the clothes that make her so damn appealing on the show.  it might be the accent or maybe it’s her character.  i can’t explain it, but there’s something so sexy about the way she portrays a poor, scottish widow falling under the charms of the rich boss of the town nucky thompson.  she cleans up good too.  i’m already looking forward to next week.

a word about runaway

kanye west’s much hyped short film runaway debuted this weekend online.  i watched the whole thing saturday night on my computer.  when it ended, i was confused.  what the hell did i just watch?  don’t get me wrong – the music was great – but what about the rest of it?  twitter was an awful place to hide from it.  people were blowing up twitter talking about how they’ve never seen anything so cool.  i’m not a hater by any means, but what am i missing?  do i need to watch it on a bigger screen?  i get the phoenix metaphor and understand why it’s important for him to rise from the ashes and prove everyone wrong, but can you really call all 34 minutes art?  i don’t know.  maybe i need to watch it again.  i’m unimpressed.  if someone can enlighten me, i’d really appreciate it.

required listening

you can’t escape the black keys right now.  they’re all over blogs, tv, and movies.  if you hear a blues stomp in a trailer for a tv show or movie, it’s 95% the black keys.  they used to be everyone’s little secret – you’d put them on at a party and 5 or 6 people would ask who it was.  they built their following that way.  the other day someone called their new album their “second album.”  i stopped myself before acting like a music snob.  brothers happens to be their 6th full length.  i’ll admit i didn’t get hip to them until thickfreakness (actual 2nd album) but it was rubber factory that made me a fan.  the first time i head “10 a.m. automatic” i lost my s**t.  never have i wanted to rock so hard.  the rest of the album is more of the same foot stomping, fist pumping blues.  “you can be oh so mean / i just can’t see, no in between / you know what the sun’s all about / when the light’s go out” auerbach sings on the opening track.  we’ve all known mean girls.  we’ve all been done wrong.  these are the central themes of this record.  “just couldn’t tie me down” is another f u to that b**ch that broke his heart.  some other favorites are “girl is on my mind” and “grown so ugly,” but the real kickers for me on this album are “the lengths” and the superb cover of the kinks “act nice and gentle to me.”  “the lengths” might be one of the saddest songs ever written.  it breaks my heart every time.  if you’re a fan of brothers (and i know you already are because i’ve probably read your blog), please explore the rest of their discography.
