the interstellar jacket

INTERSTELLAR

i saw interstellar last night.  i then stayed up for the remainder of the evening trying to decode it.  i still haven’t figured it out which is not to say that it’s not a good movie.  it is a good movie.  it’s just thought provoking and complicated and exhausting.  if you’re not into that, there’s always dumb and dumber to.

as far as menswear is concerned, there’s really only one item of clothing worth mentioning: mcconaughey’s carhartt jacket.  it’s been a working man’s staple for as long as i can remember.  i had a buddy from college who wore this exact jacket year round.  he was also a peanut farmer.  my guess is that you are not a peanut farmer and that’s ok.  it shouldn’t deter from purchasing your own interstellar jacket (there’s a reason it’s been around so long).  just make sure to throw some dirt on yours or run over it with your car before taking a test run around your city.  and in case you were wondering, his boots were red wing iron rangers (not that i notice those kinds of things).

wes lang x i+w bandana

weslangiplusw

wes lang is a badass.  if you’re not familiar with his work, google “wes lang grateful dead” or “wes lang kanye.”  dude has ridiculous amounts of street cred.  it’s no surprise that he’s a) friends with matt and carrie eddmenson from imogene + willie and b) partnered with them to make this limited edition bandana.  there are 500 of them available, so act fast if you want one.  buy yours here and be sure to check out the video on his work.

skull & bones

skanbns

i like pretty much anything skull & bones when it comes to menswear (or dog collars).  i have a couple of pairs of skull & bones socks, but no tie.  well, that is until i order this masterpiece from punk monsieur.  they’re calling it a skull tie, but i see bones on there too.  regardless of what you want to call it, it’s badass and perfect for your upcoming holiday party rotation.

signet rings

signet

there’s a nice blurb in gq this month regarding signet rings.  i’ve seen these popping up more and more over the last year or so.  i’m not big into man jewelry, but i’m down with this trend – especially if you can find a ring that tells a story (gift from your granddad or wife or whatever).  i would start with your initials and go from there.  one ring is enough.  any more and you’ll risk looking like an aging 1980’s rock star.

filson mackinaw cruiser (for the 10th time)

mackcruise

i promise i’m not trying to beat a dead horse here.  i know i’ve mentioned this jacket at least twice on this blog and there’s a reason for that.  it’s my all-time favorite jacket.  when the weather hits the 30’s or below (like today), it’s all i wear.  i went to new york last december and it’s the only coat i took with me.  it was in the teens then and i wore it with just a flannel shirt.  i never got cold (maybe i’m an alien).  if it’s cold where you are and you need a new jacket, this is the one you want.  i can’t tell you which fit you need to get, because i bought mine before filson introduced the “seattle fit” which is a slimmer fit than their traditional “alaska fit.” (note to filson: maybe just call it slim and regular.  it’s confusing.  are people in alaska bigger than people in seattle?  i dunno.)  i bought mine true to size (38) in the old-school regular fit and it’s perfect.  you can buy your very own right here at filson.com.

happy veterans day

gdad42

happy veterans day.  thank you to all the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country.  this is a photo of my granddad that i didn’t find until he passed away (he’s the middle one and his twin brother is far right).  the back of the picture says “georgia 1942.”  i can only assume it was taken at robins air force base since i never had a chance to ask him about it.  thank you one more time to all those that have served.  we appreciate it so much.

flannels

flannels

flannels.  you need them and there’s no better time than now.  i don’t mean to be too j. crew heavy on the blog (when am i not though), but their email marketing is on point.  they emailed last week about their flannels and my brain went “hey dude, you could use some flannels for the fall.”  boom.  done.  check out their selection here.  (please note: tomorrow will not be a j. crew post i promise.)

golden bear sportswear for j. crew

gbear

i like a varsity jacket.  i’ve wanted one for a while, but i’ll be honest i don’t think i can pull it off.  my shoulders are too big.  i know.  i know.  it sounds like i’m making excuses, but the last thing i need to do is to continue to benjamin button myself i.e. look younger than i already am (if that works here).  that shouldn’t deter you from wanting or copping your very own varsity jacket like this one from golden bear and j. crew.  golden bear has been making these since the 20’s.  it’s the real deal.  you’ll have no problem picking up chicks at sonic after the big game.

you need: a tie bar

tiebar1

it was awards week here in nashville.  the performance rights organizations held their awards sunday through tuesday and the cma awards were on wednesday.  i was lucky enough to attend the bmi awards (thanks bradley) and the cma awards.  why am i telling you this?  one because i’m event dropping (kind of like name dropping) and two because i had to dress up twice this week.  the one thing i’ve been adding to my suit game more and more over the past few years is a tie bar.  if you are not the proud owner of 1 or 2 or 10 tie bars, then it’s time to change that.  start simple with a 1.5 inch silver tie bar like the one you see above from the tie bar (not just a clever name).  after that the world is your oyster. feel free to mix and match as you please.  the tie bar is a great place to start.

oak street bootmakers trail socks

oakstreet1

good socks are hard to find.  once you find a pair that you like on your feet, you need to go ahead and buy 2 or 3 more pairs of the same socks.  trust me you will use them.  earlier this week oakstreet bootmakers released their own version the trail sock and they are amazing.  here are the stats: 85% recycled cotton; 13% nylon; and 2% spandex.  they are also made in the usa.  and do you want to know the best part?  they are only $8 a pair.  you read that right.  you can load up here, but don’t waste any time as they are going fast.
