patagonia pullover

25580_hclg

hello, is it me you’re looking for?  i’m sure no one has been missing me.  it’s been 6 months since i wrote something.  SIX MONTHS!!!  where the hell have i been?  honestly, i couldn’t tell you or maybe i could and you wouldn’t care.  i can see it in your eyes.  i can see it in your smile (sorry that’s some more lionel for you).  either way i’m alive.  i’d like to start writing on the reg, but you know how that goes.

in august, i went to alaska for two weeks.  it was amazing and if you follow me on instagram (user name: coopersamuels), there are a bunch of pics from the trip.  one thing i (re)discovered in alaska was how bomb patagonia is as a brand.  i bought a nano puff hoody and haven’t taken it off since (that’s a lie).  anyway…they are an amazing brand and there’s a reason i was obsessed with them in high school and college.

one thing that should be on your list this holiday season is an ugly-as-f**k snap-t fleece pullover.  i just bought the one above.  how amazing is it?  i’m not saying you should order the same one, but look at it.  it’s incredible.  you need it.  i need it.  everyone needs it.  you can get your very own here.  don’t be afraid of the u.a.f. snap-t fleece.  there are more ugly options on the website if this one doesn’t suit your fancy.

the sid mashburn navy blazer

navy-blue-blazer_01

sid mashburn’s email campaign is a cut above the rest (which is not surprising in the least bit).  a couple of weeks ago, he sent out an email on the navy blazer.  if you clicked on the link, it takes you to a page that goes into great detail regarding the fabric, the cut and the construction of this timeless jacket.  there’s also an 8 minute video of sid discussing the importance of the navy blazer.  he calls it “every man’s coat.”  i tend to agree.  if you don’t have a go-to navy blazer in your closet, then you need to save your nickels and dimes and go pick up one up.  holiday party season is coming.  why not impress your friends and the ladies by showing up in a new tailored navy blazer.

here again is the link to sid’s page.  it’s worth checking out.  trust me.  at the bottom of the page he has several pictures of when and how to wear the navy blazer (example below).  excellent work.

filson mackinaw cruiser (for the 10th time)

mackcruise

i promise i’m not trying to beat a dead horse here.  i know i’ve mentioned this jacket at least twice on this blog and there’s a reason for that.  it’s my all-time favorite jacket.  when the weather hits the 30’s or below (like today), it’s all i wear.  i went to new york last december and it’s the only coat i took with me.  it was in the teens then and i wore it with just a flannel shirt.  i never got cold (maybe i’m an alien).  if it’s cold where you are and you need a new jacket, this is the one you want.  i can’t tell you which fit you need to get, because i bought mine before filson introduced the “seattle fit” which is a slimmer fit than their traditional “alaska fit.” (note to filson: maybe just call it slim and regular.  it’s confusing.  are people in alaska bigger than people in seattle?  i dunno.)  i bought mine true to size (38) in the old-school regular fit and it’s perfect.  you can buy your very own right here at filson.com.

pea coat options

last year around this time, i bought a schott classic 32 oz melton wool pea coat.  i never left the house in it.  when i put it on, i looked like juggernaut from x-men.  i could barely put my arms down.  i let it hang in my closet until two weeks ago when i put it on ebay.  i”m now looking for a new pea coat that was made for the streets rather than a battleship.  here are a few options i found.  i’ll let you know about fit as soon as i figure out which one i’m going to choose.  if you have a pea coat that you really like that’s not super bulky, please leave a comment.  i’m open to suggestions.

baracuta g9 in british tan

a year ago, a good friend of mine gave me his old baracuta g9 in olive green.  it was a size too big for me, but i fell in love with it regardless.  i don’t think i took it off for several months.  this spring i ordered one in my size (the original fits true to your jacket size).  the good news is that it arrived this afternoon; the bad news is that the temperature in nashville was 80 degrees today .  i’m hoping the weather will cool down for a week or two, so i can get a couple of wears in before it’s too hot.

if you’re thinking about buying a baracuta g9, do it.  it’s such a classic jacket.   i get more compliments on my green one than any other jacket in my closet.  and if you’re going to buy one, do it from o’connell’s clothing in buffalo, ny. they have a great selection and take excellent care of their customers.  i can’t recommend them enough.

black and blue

my 3 year old barbour bedale is one of my favorite possessions.  i haven’t seen or worn a jacket that comes anywhere close to it.  i’m headed to new york next week and it’s the only jacket i’m going to take with me.  my only problem with the bedale is that everyone loves the sage color.  i had dinner with some friends last weekend and 3 of us were wearing the exact same jacket.  this is not a new problem.  i mentioned nashville’s growing barbour population around this time last year (see this post).  i even tried to find an alternative, but i couldn’t find anything i like as much as my barbour.  so what’s a blogger to do?  i’ve decided to get another color.  i know i should probably abandon barbour all together and look for another brand, but i can’t.  i just can’t.  it’s my go-to coat.  i’m thinking about either the black or the navy.  which one do you think i should go with?

red clay soul & to take the train black friday loot

you might remember that i ordered a penfield outback vest last month in british green.  it’s become a weekend staple of mine since it arrived (i never leave home without it).  a week or so later, i saw a tweet from jrs of red clay soul saying that he had seen the cobalt colored vest at sid mashburn’s and that it looked phenomenal.  my interest were piqued.  i responded to his tweet that maybe i made mistake in my color selection.  fast forward to black friday: jrs sends me a direct message asking if i wanted to split 20% off the cobalt vest via penfield’s website.  it took a matter of seconds for me to say “hell yes.”  the vest arrived this week and jay has posted an excellent review over at red clay soul.  please check it out.  these pictures belong to him (obviously since they’re 100x better than my originals).  thanks again for cutting me in on your black friday loot, jay.

acquired: barbour liddesdale

in anticipation of cooler weather, i bought a barbour liddesdale two weeks ago.  it’s been in the 70’s ever since.  not that i’m complaining, but i’d like to wear it sooner than later.  it’s a nice lightweight coat that’s perfect for the transition from fall to winter.  i went with the navy, because i’ve got an olive bedale.
