new blog: notes from the range

palmerkiss

“golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. it is at the same time rewarding and maddening – and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented.”

– arnold palmer

it’s been a minute since i’ve posted anything on here.  some of you might have been wondering where i’ve disappeared to or maybe you haven’t (it won’t hurt my feelings if it’s the latter).  this summer i’ve become a bit golf obsessed which i tell my girlfriend is a good thing because it keeps me off the streets and off of hard drugs (that’s a joke btw).  i have this crazy goal that i want to become scratch sometime in the next 2-3 years and play a qualifying round for the us open.  the big problem is that i’m currently 9.1 handicap index points away from said goal and my game is nowhere near as close as it needs to be.  the bottom line is that i have a lot of work left to do.  with that said, i’ve started a new blog to chronicle my golf exploits (and obsession).  it’s called notes from the range and you can access it here.  i’ll still be posting on to take the train from time to time, but if you really want to know what i’m up to, please check out notes from the range.

golf kit 2015

golfkit2015

i’ve caught the golf bug.  i always get it around this time of year.  it usually last for 3 or 4 months and then disappears when the weather gets cold.  i’m not a great golfer, but i aspire to be.  the first step to reaching that goal is to look like a golfer.  with that said, here’s what i’m wearing and swinging this summer:

travis mathews golf shirt – these shirts are amazing.  they are fitted and have a retro feel to them.  if they’re good enough for bubba, they’re good enough for me.

ecco golf shoes – i used to think these looked ridiculous.  not anymore.  i couldn’t play without them.  they are the most comfortable golf shoes on the market and i’ve pretty much tried them all.  not even joking.

yeti rambler – it will keep your drink cool for days.  days.  did you hear that?  days.

scotty cameron newport 2.5 putter – the very first “big” item i ever purchased with my own money was a scotty cameron putter.  i now own 4 of them.  i refuse to putt with anything else.

titleist pro v1 golf balls – the best golf balls on the market (in my opinion).

masters tour visor – i realize tour visors are super fratty, but i don’t care.  they are essential to my golf game.  no link provided, but you may be able to find one on ebay.

callaway big bertha alpha 815 driver – i must confess.  i don’t own this driver, but i will before the end of the summer.  i bought two callaway fairway woods last year and trust that this driver is the best on the market.  i’ll keep you posted.

arsenal ball marker poker chips – you need something to mark your ball with, so why not show your support for the best football club on the planet.

scotty cameron belt buckle – you will never catch me in a white belt, but that doesn’t mean i’m not going to rock a dope belt buckle while i’m taking your $3 (nassau, bitches).

j. crew 9″ stanton shorts – 9″ is the perfect shorts length for the golf course.  please no chubbies or stand up shorts.  leave your balls in your bag (see what i did there?  i am hilarious.)

katin for club monaco

i’m kicking myself.  i hate being late to the party.  i’ve been off my blog game for the last two months.  too much damn travel.  if i had been paying attention, then i would have seen this collaboration between club monaco and surfwear brand katin much much sooner, and i would have purchased a pair of the paradise trunks you see above.  stupid me.  instead, i’m left wondering if i’ll find a pair of trunks for the summer that i like half as much as these.  they do have a red and navy available in my size.  that’s a win, right?  you can check out the full collection here, but before you do watch this video for a primer on the collaboration:

jackie robinson off the field

april 15th is one of my favorite days in all of sports.  it’s jackie robinson day.  on april 15th, 1947 jackie robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball by becoming the first african american to play in the major leagues since it was segregated in 1889.  his efforts and determination both on and off the field were seen as one of the major steps in the civil rights revolution.  every year on this day, major league ballplayers wear #42 to honor jackie.  we’ve all seen pictures of him wearing his brooklyn dodgers uniform, but i thought it’d be cool to take a look at how he dressed when he wasn’t playing baseball.

congratulations to bubba watson

masters week is my favorite week of the year.  i’m already sad it’s over.  the tournament started on thursday with the promise of being one of the best in recent memory.  the story lines were all there.  tiger has been playing better.  rory was primed to pick up the pieces from last year’s collapse and leave with a win.  luke donald, the number 1 player in the world, was ready to take home his first major, but in the end, bubba watson stole the spotlight and the prized green jacket by defeating louis oosthuizen on the second hole of a sudden death playoff.  it was a great win for bubba and a great week for golf.  now i just need to figure out where i can get one of those awesome ping tour visors (below).

esquire’s best (and worst) dressed at the masters

sorry for the lack of posts this week.  i’ve been out of town.  i got back from vegas late monday night and then went down to augusta for a couple of days on tuesday.  i’ve been recovering ever since.

esquire has posted a list of the best and worst dressed players at the masters.  i was pleased to see that my buddy brandt made the cut.  he signed a deal with peter millar last year to keep him looking fresh on the course.  rumor has it, he wore a pair of pink and white plaid pants today.  it must have helped his game, because he posted a 68.  i’ll post a pic as soon as i can find one.

found one (below).  not quite the rumored pink and plaid i mentioned earlier, but definitely easter appropriate.  good luck tomorrow, sned.

holiday gift idea: warstic bat co. baseball bat

if you have any baseball obsessed individuals on your christmas list, give them one of these half dipped baseball bats from the warstic bat co.  it’s the perfect amount of swagger for that friendly sandlot game this spring.  they take 5-7 days to ship, so get your order in today if you want it here by next sunday.

cold weather running gear

now that college football is over it’s time to get my ass off the couch and start running again.  running on the treadmill is great, but you can’t beat the great outdoors – even when it’s freezing outside.  here’s what you’ll need to stay warm running this winter:

new balance windblocker jacket: it’s windproof, waterproof, and made with lightning dry fabric that will help wick away the moisture.

under armour cold gear compression shirt: like long underwear but tighter and warmer.

nike wool running hat: you’ll need something to cover your head and ears like this dri-fit wool running hat from nike.

drymax cold weather running socks: drymax are my favorite running socks.  their cold weather socks have a dual layer moisture removal system that instantly moves moisture from the skin.

under armour compression leggings: the best protection for your legs in cold weather.  i’ll usually throw on a pair of shorts over them, so no one has to look at my junk.

nike lightweight running gloves: you can’t forget about your hands when running in cold weather.  plus, ladies don’t like men with chaffed hands.

asics gt-2160 running shoes: my new favorite running shoes.  they’re the perfect mix of stability and comfort.

now all you’ve got to do is find the time to get started.  good luck!

“hunker down, you guys”

it’s been a bittersweet weekend for dawgs fans.  we won the east and are playing in the sec championship game, but we lost a great one.  larry munson, the voice of georgia football, died tonight at 89.  he quit calling games in 2008, but every georgia fan i know listens to his old calls on gameday.  it’s gonna be tough to hunker down without him.  we’ll miss you, larry.

the sid mashburn double monk strap

these shoes need no introduction; however, they do deserve better pictures.  i’m still snapping everything with my iphone after hours, so i apologize for the crappy pics.  i’ve been on a bit of a buying tear lately – some might call it retail therapy (it’s been one of those weeks).  you might remember that a couple of months ago i ordered a pair of  allen edmonds moras.  i wore them for a few days and determined they were a too big, so i sold them to a happy ebayer.  i should have started with the sid mashburn double monks.  they are perfect shoes.  if they’re not instantly your favorite shoes, then i can’t help you.  size down .5.
