out today: drive on blu-ray

upon second and third viewing, drive was my favorite movie of 2011 in front of midnight in paris and 50/50.  it’s a damn shame the academy didn’t give it any love when they announced the oscar nominations last week.  one film blogger said it was too much of a homage film to stand out amongst the other nominees.  huh?  i’m no film expert, but isn’t the artist a homage to silent movies?  moving right along…drive is out today on blu-ray.  if you haven’t seen it, you’re in for a real treat.  i’m not going to give anything away, but the movie is not what you expect.  ryan gosling is perfectly cast as the no-named driver.  dude is a total badass.  if you’re interested in learning more about the style in drive, see my previous post here.  great flick.

j. crew sweater collective

i planned to do a post on the sweaters i liked this season from various stores/designers, but found about 10 i liked from j. crew.  i tend to buy most of my sweaters at j. crew because of the quality and price.  i’ll do a follow up post on other sweaters later this month.  until then here are my 5 favorite from j. crew:

shawl collar henley

cotton-cashmere v-neck

lambwool crewneck

lambswool fair isle

cashmere sweatshirt

for fall: the motorcycle jacket

i’ve been obsessed with motorcycle jackets ever since i discovered the ramones.  it’s one of those things i’ve always wanted, but have been hesitant to pull the trigger on because i don’t “technically” have or ride a motorcycle.  who cares about that?  not me.  now might be the time to buy one as affordable options are popping up in online stores like park and bond.

if you’re thinking about buying one, here are a few things to remember: #1 black is best.  this fall i’ve seen them in brown, burgundy, dark green, and other strange colors.  stay from those.  go with black.  #2 don’t buy a “”washed” leather jacket.  part of the fun is breaking it in.  “distressed” and “washed” leather jackets will make you look like you’re trying too hard.  #3 don’t blow your budget.  there’s no reason to spend your life savings on a motorcycle jacket.  you may never wear it.  keep it under a grand with these two options below.

the hill-side leaf camo necktie

last friday, the hill-side took over the blogosphere.  i’m not sure if it was planned, but a few of my favorite reads featured some of their neckwear (see a headlong dive, alex grant, and dreams of perfection).  one of the pieces that caught my eye was this leaf camo necktie.  i figure i might as well jump on the camo bandwagon before it’s too late.  if you’re interested in grabbing one of your own, then head over to hickoree’s for more details.

also be sure to check out the hill-side’s a/w 2011 lookbook found here.

vans x harris tweed chukka

fall must be approaching because harris tweed is back in the picture.  this time vans is using the scottish cloth on their classic chukkas.  the coolest part about the shoe is the harris tweed branding on the tongue.  the uncoolest part about the shoe is that they’re an asia exclusive release.

spring shirt options: j. crew

with spring right around the corner, i’m going to spend the next couple of weeks picking out some of my favorite shirts for the season.  i’m starting with j. crew because their stuff fits me perfectly and it’s great quality for the price.

gant rugger spring/summer 2011

i love these video especially when there is a vintage motorcycles involved (aka something i will never own).  i also love gant ruggers stuff, but don’t own any.  if i head back up to nyc this spring, i will definitely be making some purchases.

on a different: the band playing in the video is us royalty who also did the video for gant ruggers f/w 2010.  i downloaded half of their new album yesterday.  i can’t decide if i like them or not.  “every summer” (released a couple of years ago) is a great track, but their insistence on being aligned to the fashion world turns me off a little bit.  i understand the importance of good promotion, but they seem to be taking it a bit too far.  i like my rock bands to at least pretend like they don’t give a shit (see below).

coming to nashville july 2011

u2 is coming to nashville july 2, 2011.  this is a dream come true for me.  i lucked out and got some great presale tickets.  i’ve seen u2 3 times and i’d recommend you seeing them before they retire.  it’s an incredible live show.  i wasn’t a fan before i saw them live and now i’m a super fan.  it’s a long wait until july but it will be well worth it.  get tickets by any means necessary.

looking forward to next spring

i know i’ve said a million times i’m excited for fall weather, but i can’t help but think about how great next spring will be if girls are dressing like this.  i also never thought i’d be posting something from a dulce and gabanna fashion show on one of my blogs.  do i feel a little less manly?  nah, cause this lady looks incredible.
