alden for j. crew navy longwings

hat tip to jeremiah at a head long dive for the heads up on these alden for j. crew navy longwings and also for this:

can i be honest with you? whew (*wipes hand across forehead), great. i’m sick and tired of pontificating about shit like goodyear welts, full-leather lining and tempered steel shanks, so whether or not you give a baker’s fuck, let’s just agree that all those details and craftsmanship are valuable, comes with all alden footwear and move on.

lmao (i have never typed that, but felt it necessary in this situation).  thank you for saying what needed to be said (for reference see here).  i can’t remember which collaborator had some navy longwings last fall, but i missed the boat and have been looking for a pair ever since.  if i can set aside some cash, i will hopefully make these babies mine sometime in the next month or two, but we all know i stink at saving money, so we’ll see how this goes.

for work: black alden tassel loafers

excuse the messy camera phone photo.  i slipped these off at the office and took a quick pic.  there are a lot of bloggers out there that will tell you to steer clear of black.  in most situations, that’s absolutely true i.e. avoid black shirts, suits, and pants at all costs.  if you’re a fan of black jeans, then you must be in a rock and roll band and more power to you.  i wear a suit to work every day and most of the time pair my dark charcoal and dark navy suits with (gasp) black footwear.  last week, i purchased the black alden tassel loafers you see above.  i’ve never been a big loafer guy with my suits, but these work nicely.  the only downside to buying black shoes for work purposes is that you can’t wear them on the weekends with jeans or khakis.  well, i guess you could, but i wouldn’t if i were you.

new kicks: alden for j. crew longwing bluchers

you might remember my ridiculous dilemma last week when i couldn’t decide between alden cordovan loafers or cordovan longwings.  i threw a curveball into the mix as i opted for neither.  i went with the alden for j. crew longwing bluchers – mainly because i needed a pair of dark brown lace-ups to wear with my navy and charcoal suits.  i figured i would make the cordovan loafers my next purchase.  the longwings arrived yesterday and they are perfect in every way.  the only thing wasn’t perfect was that j. crew shipped them in a generic j. crew shoe box with no shoe bags.  i contacted their customer service last night regarding the shoe bags and they said they’re going to send me some.  that’s good customer service right there.  shoe bags or no shoe bags i still love my new longwings.

cordovan wingtips or cordovan loafers

i did make it by the alden store last week when i was in new york (one of the only stops we made besides our meetings).  i tried on the 986 cordovan loafers.  i took a few steps around the store and decided to wait (my co-workers didn’t share my enthusiasm for aldens plus we were pressed for time).  now that i’m back i can’t make my mind up between the loafers or the wingtips in the cordovan color 8.  my shoe collection lacks a pair of wingtips, but everyone i know swears by the 986 loafers.  which one do you prefer?

ford, spielberg and lucas on the set of indiana jones

if you’re a regular reader of to take the train, then you know my obsession with the indiana jones movies.  i give steven spielberg and george lucas a lot of credit for shaping my imagination as a child.  i always thought at some point in my life i would move to hollywood and start making movies for a living.  there’s still time right?

over the holidays i saw spielberg’s new animated film the adventures of tintin – which reminded me a lot of indiana jonesi read spielberg discovered tintin when a review of raiders of the lost ark compared it to the long standing comic book written by belgian georges remi (who wrote under the pen name herge).  spielberg bought the movie rights shortly after herge’s death in 1983 and re-optioned them in 2002.  i enjoyed the film, but it made me crave more indiana jones movies.

when i got home from the theater, i went on a small quest to find inspiration in some behind the scenes photos of speilberg, lucas, and ford on the set of the indy movies.  i definitely found it in the following photos.  don’t worry i’m not going all safari shirts and bomber jackets in 2012, but come spring you might find a few things from these photos that have made their way into my personal style. the alden indy boot

i’ve wanted these indy boots for over 3 years now.  i’ve been to new york twice during this time with the intention to buy a pair at the alden store on madison avenue.  i chickened out both times after trying them on.  i told the guys working there that i would order a pair when i got back to nashville.  i finally made good on that promise last month when a friend of mine told me he knew one of the gentlemen that worked at that store (shout out to curt who took excellent care of me).

it only took me two tries to get the size right.  i measure a 9.5 on a brannock device and went a half size down as instructed.   the 9 felt huge on my feet, so i returned and reordered an 8.5.  they fit like a glove.  these are by far some of the nicest boots i will ever own.  they’re every bit worth the wait and money.  i can’t wait to break them in; although, i probably won’t let them get as destroyed as indiana jones’:

brogue boot round up

one thing on my wish list for the fall is a pair brogue boots.  they’ll look great with a suit or your favorite denim.  a lot of brands are making them this fall, but here are my four favorites:

fall boot debate 2011

i’m trying to save a little cash these days, so i’m allowing myself one new pair of boots for the fall.  i’ve narrowed my choices down to two: alden 403 “indy” boots and wolverine 1000 mile boots.  i like the price of the wolverines much better than the aldens, but i’ve heard the indy boots are really comfortable.  i’m giving myself a week to decide.  which one do you think i should go with?

while you were out featuring j. crew

i’ve been slammed at work for the past two days and haven’t been able to post or read any of my favorite blogs.  while i was out, j. crew has been busy adding some new things to their store.  let’s take a look.

timex andros watch – in most cases i would be opposed to paying $150 for something that costs considerably less to make, but this watch looks impressive.

limited edition alden black alpine longwing bluchers – these bluchers are handcrafted in horween’s chromexcel pebbled leather and then hand stained and polished.  better act fast.

quoddy tri-color chukka boots – i’m embarrassed to say i don’t own anything made by quoddy.  these would be a good starting point.

red wing 2904 – j. crew, please stop doing red wing collaborations.  it’s killing my wallet.  red wing experts correct me if i’m wrong but i believe this model was conceived entirely by j. crew.  i’ve never seen it or heard of it before.

new balance 1400 sneakers – i know i talk about these ad nauseum but i really like this new military grey color.

persol aviator sunglasses – aviators never go out of style.  invest accordingly.

new work shoes

i need a new pair of brown shoes i can wear to work, but can’t decide what to get.  my two options are below.  both would be solid investments.  let me know what you think.
