2016 wish list: black double monks

sidmonksblack1

it’s been a minute since i’ve talked about double monks.  that doesn’t mean i’m not wearing them once or twice a week.  i have a pair of brown ones, but i think it’s time to go to the dark side (sorry couldn’t resist a star wars reference).  i wear a suit to work every day, so i need to continue to add to my shoe arsenal.  my target is another pair of monks from sid mashburn.  they don’t get any better looking than these.

golden bear sportswear for j. crew

gbear

i like a varsity jacket.  i’ve wanted one for a while, but i’ll be honest i don’t think i can pull it off.  my shoulders are too big.  i know.  i know.  it sounds like i’m making excuses, but the last thing i need to do is to continue to benjamin button myself i.e. look younger than i already am (if that works here).  that shouldn’t deter you from wanting or copping your very own varsity jacket like this one from golden bear and j. crew.  golden bear has been making these since the 20’s.  it’s the real deal.  you’ll have no problem picking up chicks at sonic after the big game.

air jordan 1 retro high “barons”

jpbaron

much to the chagrin of (some) friends and family and various readers of to take the train, i am a big fan of air jordans.  the 1’s and the 3’s are my favorites.  i bought a pair of air jordan 3 retro “infrareds” a couple of months back and took some pretty harsh criticism from those around me.  i ended up returning them (frowny face).

i get it.  they’re not necessarily “me” or my particular style – which is one reason i like them so much.  the other reason i’m into air jordans is because they remind me of my childhood.  i remember wearing the 1’s, 3’s, 4’s, 5’s and 6’s.  i skipped the 2’s.  i still don’t care for them.

after jabari parker was drafted by the bucks last week, he threw out the first pitch at a milwaukee brewers game and was wearing a pair of air jordan 1 retro high “barons.”  the color motif is a nod to jordan’s minor league baseball days with the birmingham barons.  right now these are at the top of my “to cop” list.  i’m a sucker for grey sneakers.  i was in las vegas when they dropped and slept through my phone alarm (damn it!).  the next time i have an extra $200 lying around i know where it’s going.  in the meantime, i can admire these through various pictures on the internet.  oh, and i wish jabari parker a long and successful career in the nba (not that he reads this blog, but i figured i might as well throw that in there.  i liked watching him at duke).

black and blue

my 3 year old barbour bedale is one of my favorite possessions.  i haven’t seen or worn a jacket that comes anywhere close to it.  i’m headed to new york next week and it’s the only jacket i’m going to take with me.  my only problem with the bedale is that everyone loves the sage color.  i had dinner with some friends last weekend and 3 of us were wearing the exact same jacket.  this is not a new problem.  i mentioned nashville’s growing barbour population around this time last year (see this post).  i even tried to find an alternative, but i couldn’t find anything i like as much as my barbour.  so what’s a blogger to do?  i’ve decided to get another color.  i know i should probably abandon barbour all together and look for another brand, but i can’t.  i just can’t.  it’s my go-to coat.  i’m thinking about either the black or the navy.  which one do you think i should go with?

sid mashburn double monks now in black and suede

the most talked about men’s shoe in the blogosphere, the double monk strap, is now available in black and suede from the internet’s most talked about men’s shop sid mashburn.  both look phenomenal.  my brown double monks have quickly become my favorite pair of kicks for work and weekend (i can’t wait to get them back by the way).  if you’ve been thinking about jumping on the double monks train, now is the time to do it.  get after these.  you won’t regret it.

just like new

this post would be more exciting if my dumbass would have taken a couple of “before” pics.  as i mentioned last week, they were in such bad shape that i was embarrassed to show how far i let them go.

i received my recrafted park avenue shoes on monday.  they look brand new.  i left the flash on the camera so you could see just how polished they are.  i went with the “prestige” package which included shoes trees and shoe bags in addition to the new sole (love the hammer detail) and refinish.  allen edmonds threw in a nice thank you card with a $35 gift certificate and some polish.  your local shoe repair man could give you a nice resole, but nothing this fine.  one more reason why i buy shoes from allen edmonds.

now in black

it took everything in my power not to say back in black, but after 114 years, filson is now offering some of their most popular products in black.  it’s funny i would have thought they were making black belts and wallets for years now.  i guess not.  they’ve also added a wool peacoat to their lineup.  in all honesty, i’m partial to my grey mackinaw cruiser, but it’s always nice to have options.
