common projects chelsea boots in charcoal

i need these boots.  they’re sold out on mr. porter.  this brings a tear to at least one of my eyes.  i bought a pair of brown ones last summer.  they are my go-to kicks.  if you see a pair of these somewhere on the internet, please holler at ya boi.  i need them asap.

need: blundstone boots

blundstonesi’ve been traveling a ton lately – not that i’m complaining because i love to travel.  when we’re in a new city, we tend to walk somewhere around 8-10 miles per day which means you gotta have the right footwear on to make that happen.  most trips you can find me in my red wing iron rangers, but lately they’ve become a bit heavy and uncomfortable.  oh, and you have to take them off in airport security even if you’re pre-check because of the metal.  it’s annoying.

i’ve been doing a little research for some new travel boots.  my main criteria are as follows: light, comfortable, and an easy transition from day to night.  enter the blundstone 500 series.  these are the classic australian work boots that can take a beating during the day and not get you kicked out of a nice restaurant at night (well, maybe not super nice but they’re not nikes ok).

i’ll confess, i bought a pair several years ago, but returned them do to sizing issues.  i ended up never buying the bigger size.  it might be time to try again.  i’ve heard only good things about them.  anybody have any experience with these?  if you’re debating between the 500 and 550, this dude made a really great video regarding the subtle differences.  really great job, youtube reviewer.

reminder: use mink oil

img_2253

it’s the holiday season.  who’s excited?  i’m excited.  you know who else is excited…my growing collection of red wings because they get a nice new coat of mink oil.  mink oil preserves, protects and waterproofs the leather.  you want these on your boots.  i bought the can you see above on amazon for $6.  that’s a small price to pay for protecting your favorite wintertime footwear.  happy start of the holidays and the shite weather.  cheers!

red wing weekender chukka boots

redwingweekender1.png

are you sick of your clarks desert boots yet?  i was, so i searched for an alternative and low and behold i found these red wing weekender chukka boots.  since i don’t blog as much as i used to and/or keep up as much as i used to, i didn’t know these were a thing, but they are.  they’re solid shoes for the summer when you have to wear pants.  the only thing is that they’re wide as hell, so if you have a narrow foot, go for a size down.  if you have a wide foot go a half size down.  break in time is less than a full day in them.  nice job red wing.  get yours at todd snyder.

the best boots i ever bought

ironranger1

if you’ve been a reader of this blog since the beginning, then you know my obsession with red wing boots.  i’ve been searching for the right pair and fit for at least 5 years now.  i realize there is a lot happening in the world and i should probably find something else to do, but i really really like red wing boots.

last year around this time, i tried my luck on some black (gasp) iron rangers, and what do you know they’ve been the best boots i ever bought.  they took no time at all to break in and are now more comfortable than most of my athletic shoes.  they were also the only kicks i took with me when i went to paris and london this past summer.  i probably logged 5-10 miles a day in these s**t-kickers.

if you’re looking for a good winter boot or just a really awesome year round boot, then give these a try.  i would recommend buying two pairs – 1 a half size smaller than your regular shoe size and 1 a whole size smaller.  as with all red wings, sizing on these is tricky.  good luck.

fall wish list: suede chelsea boots

mashchelsea1

fall is just around the corner.  fall is just around the corner.  fall is just around the corner.  if i say it enough, then maybe it will get here sooner.  it’s been 98º this weekend in nashville.  i’ve had enough.  it’s time for fall.  first thing on my fall wish list is a pair of suede chelsea boots like these from sid mashburn.  these particular boots have been on my wish list for a couple of years now, but the time feels right to finally make the purchase.  the plan is to hit atlanta sometime in september (braves game anyone?).  these will be coming back with me.

red wing 875 in oro legacy

redwing4

if you’re a regular reader of to take the train, then you’re probably thinking, “why the hell am i looking at another pair of red wings?”  well, i don’t have a great answer to that question except to say these are new and i like them.

earlier this year, red wing announced they were reverting back to the original, untreated leather of their 875s and calling it the “oro legacy.”  the boot hasn’t changed at all.  it’s still a moc toe work boot made on the same last as the 875 that you’ve grown to love.  the only difference is the leather.  the orange color is a bit brighter and slicker which is going to give it more character as it breaks in.  i’ve been wearing them for a week now and they look pretty damn good.  the other great thing about these is that you can actually find them on zappos.  i had to track down the original 875s at the red wing store or some nuts-ass army surplus store in bumf**k.  life can be so hard sometimes.

mcqueen on set

mscquuenonset2.1

this picture needs no explanation.  there was no one cooler than steve mcqueen.  few guys can pull off the white v-neck t-shirt quite like mcqueen did in between takes on the set of bullitt.  but, hey, if you want to try, here’s a good starting point:

brannock

this may sound ridiculous, but until last week i didn’t know my shoe size.  for those of you that know me, this is no surprise.  i’m constantly buying shoes, wearing them for two days, and then putting them up on ebay.  it’s become a ridiculous and expensive cycle, but a nice one for ebayers that like red wings and aldens.

the week before thanksgiving i called the closest red wing store and had them ship me a new pair of boots.  they didn’t fit.  they were too wide and too short.  i tried to ship them back, but they made me come to the store.  i’m glad i did.  the lady working at the store measured me on red wing’s machine and gave me the bad/good news: i measured an 11a.  i told her she was crazy and that i was 9.5 or a 10.  she then pulled out the brannock device and that’s when things clicked.  Continue reading

dan auerbach inspired spring style

i have a bit of a dude crush on dan auerbach of the black keys.  we share the same affinity for red wing boots, nashville eateries, and good denim.  oh, and he makes kick ass music.  if i were rock star, i would treat my style the same way dan does: “the shit that i put on when i wake up every day is the shit that i wear on stage.”  with that said, i’ve put together an auerbach inspired kit for the spring.  i guess it’s time to add some short sleeve snap button western shirts to my arsenal.  after all, i do live in the snap button western shirt capital of the world.
