l.b.m. 1911 single breasted jacket

lbm1911

i’ve wanted one of these l.b.m. 1911 jackets for a couple of years now.  i made a promise to myself in late 2012 that i couldn’t buy one until i dropped the extra 25 lbs i’ve been carrying around for 2 years.  good news: the weight is finally gone (more on that in a couple of posts) and i’m ready to make the purchase.  i’m not sure how these things fit, so my plan is to stop by haberdash when i’m in chicago next month and get fitted.  it’s a shame too, because i have a couple of good trips before chicago where a unstructured, light-weight, slim-fitting jacket would come in handy.  i’m thinking i’ll go with the navy.  my backup color will be the green version.  if you have one, please share with me which color you chose and if you like it.  i can’t imagine i won’t like this jacket.  for more info on l.b.m, check out the description from epaulet’s site (which is where i grabbed this image.  thanks, guys).

legends of summer style

legends-CST-072413-01.JPG

i went to the legends of summer show last night in chicago.  it was amazing.  seeing jay-z in concert was a bucket list item for me.    he’s a legend.  i’ll be the first to admit that it took several appearances on snl for me to warm up to justin timberlake.  his association with the early 2000’s boy band movement should have relegated him to music purgatory, but the dude climbed out of it just fine.  he killed it last night; he’s a true entertainer.  consider me a fan.

one thing i took away from the show was jt’s summer concert look.  i’m not saying you or i could pull off this look (because we’re not famous entertainers that sell out stadiums), but it’s definitely worth noting.  to open the show, timberlake wore a white short sleeve shirt buttoned all the way to the top and a fitted pair of black shorts that hit right above the knees.  he topped it off with a black tribly hat and a custom pair of air jordans (that he later gave away via instagram).  the shirt and shorts were tailored perfectly – which got me thinking: the more i try to understand what style is the more i realize it’s all about the fit.  and you don’t have to be jt or jay z to get that right.  guys, make sure your clothes fit.

it was truly a memorable evening.  i hope you get a chance to catch one of the remaining shows.  i’m already trying to figure out how i can score tickets to see jt when he comes to nashville in a couple of months.

oak street bootmakers trail oxford

i hate the internet.  it’s an enabler for someone like me.  earlier today i was going through some of my favorite tumblrs when a picture of some beat-to-hell oak street bootmaker trail oxfords popped up.  they looked fantastic.  i went to oak street’s website to order some, but found out they were backordered 6 weeks (who has that kind of time?).  luckily i remembered a friend of mine told me imogene + willie just started carrying the trail oxford.  since i’m a 5 minute drive from i + w, i figured i might need to go check them out in person.  the plan was to try them on now and purchase them later, but they were too comfortable.  i bought them on the spot.  i guess i’m a sucker for horween chromexel leather and a vibram sole.

sizing tip: go a half size down.

mitchell and ness throwback hats

i’m a sucker for anything that reminds me of my childhood, so when i rediscovered these mitchell and ness hats i thought they were worth a mention.  my first encounter with mitchell and ness came this past spring when i spotted some nba throwbacks at a local sporting goods store.  i dismissed them as too hip hop for me, but cool none-the-less.  last week when searching for a new bears hat, i found the mitchell and ness website (thanks google) and my jaw dropped.  i actually owned the original versions of all three hats above.  the hats are made with cotton twill or wool and feature the high crown retro shape and green under visor that we all loved when we were kids.  i’ve been complaining about how they don’t make snapback hats like they used to.  thanks to mitchell and ness i can’t complain any more.
