drake – more life and clarks collab

drakemorelife

drake’s long anticipated more life dropped on saturday night.   i just read it broke the 24 hour streaming record with 89.9 million streams.  wow.  that’s insane.  i’m about 4 full spins through and i really really like it.  on a scale of 1 to take care, it feels like a solid 8 right now, but that rating could go up with each listen.  there’s a lot going on in this record.  it’s going to take some time to truly dissect it.  with that in mind, stand out tracks to me are: “passionfruit”, “portland”, and “ice melts.”  that should give you a nice start for your spring break playlist.

in other drake news (and also on saturday night), he posted an instagram picture of some custom made ovo clarks desert boots.  hmm.  very interesting.  is there an ovo / clarks collaboration on the way?  i’m not a hypebeast by any means, but i do love me some clarks.

clarks x horween desert boots

horween

fall is finally here.  actually, it’s been here for a month.  nashville is just late to the party weather-wise.  it was in the forties this weekend.  i friggin’ love it.

nothing quite says fall footwear like a crispy pair of desert boots.  this year i’m trading in my suede joints for these new clarks x horween leather dbs.  if you’re not hip to horween, you can get schooled here.  it’s some of the best leather in the world (i’m probably not qualified to make this statement, but i can say whatever i want ’cause this is a blog).

you can buy your very own pair here.  don’t forget to go a 1/2 size down from your normal shoe size.  they run big.  i would also recommend an insole for maximum comfort.

steve mcqueen style: world war II service boots

like many #menswear bloggers, steve mcqueen was a major influence on my current obsession with personal style.  my first introduction to him came from his film the great escape.  a friend of mine told me he wore desert boots in the film, so i went to clarks and bought some desert boots.  it wasn’t until watching the film a second time that i realized his boots looked nothing like my clarks.  i went to the internet for answers and discovered that mcqueen’s boots in the great escape were world war ii service boots and not desert boots.  i spent the next several hours back on the internet looking for anything that resembled wwii service boots.  i found nothing…until now.  l.l. bean signature has recently released their very own version of the classic boot made with roughed out leather and a rubber soul.  they look pretty damn close to the boots in the picture above if you ask me.  time to put on your persols, fire up your triumph tr6 650, and make your own great escape (sorry i couldn’t resist).

if you’re looking for more information on some of mqueen’s other footwear choices, see my previous post on his playboy boots here.

how to protect your boots

it’s about that time to pull out your fall and winter boots, but before you wear them be sure to apply a nice coat of sno-seal to protect them from the rain and snow.  it’s the best leather waterproofing stuff you can find.  here’s what i do with mine:

  • leave them in the sun for a couple of hours to heat them (or use a hair dryer if you don’t have that kind of time).  the warm leather will melt the sno-seal and get it in the pores.
  • apply sno-seal liberally to the boot with a cut up old t-shirt or soft cloth.
  • remove all the excess wax with another piece of t-shirt or rag.
  • buff with a brush.

it’s an easy process and i’m sure you can read the instruction on the can, but i figured it was worth noting.  the most important part is heating the boot so the sno-seal can get into the fibers and pores.  we spend good money on our boots, so we might as well take care of them.

to take the train tailgating style part 1

stealing a page straight from the red clay soul book of style (see below), i bring you to take the train tailgating style part 1.  like rcs, i’m keeping it simple while it’s still hot.

uga cutter & buck polo: never wear a t-shirt to tailgate.  if you want to show your pride on your shirt, opt for a clean looking polo with a small logo instead.

apc petite standards: i never leave home without them and they’re still dark enough to mask whatever i spill (i don’t wear shorts if i’m not at the beach or on the golf course).

sid mashburn bridle strap belt & engraved belt buckle: my favorite buckle and belt strap.

clarks desert boots: my go-to kicks when i can’t decide between sneakers and loafers.

moscot nebb sunglasses: cause everyone else will be wearing wayfarers.

gray clarks desert boots

i can’t remember where i saw these the other day, but i need a new pair of dbs and these might be it.  i’ve been rocking the beeswax dbs for the last two years and they’re on their last legs.  as soon as my budget allows it these will be mine.

desert boots

a woman after my own heart.  i love desert boots on girls.
