filson vermonter flask

filsonflask

file this under things you don’t need because it’s way too expensive ($325) to treat yo self, but if someone gave it to you as a gift, you would be really excited to receive it because it’s awesome.  you are looking at a filson flask, but it’s not just any flask.  it’s made out of copper and according to filson it’s leakproof.  it’s also wrapped in tin cloth and bridle leather for “durability and added grip” – which you will probably need after consuming 3/4 of its contents.

filson mackinaw cruiser (for the 10th time)

mackcruise

i promise i’m not trying to beat a dead horse here.  i know i’ve mentioned this jacket at least twice on this blog and there’s a reason for that.  it’s my all-time favorite jacket.  when the weather hits the 30’s or below (like today), it’s all i wear.  i went to new york last december and it’s the only coat i took with me.  it was in the teens then and i wore it with just a flannel shirt.  i never got cold (maybe i’m an alien).  if it’s cold where you are and you need a new jacket, this is the one you want.  i can’t tell you which fit you need to get, because i bought mine before filson introduced the “seattle fit” which is a slimmer fit than their traditional “alaska fit.” (note to filson: maybe just call it slim and regular.  it’s confusing.  are people in alaska bigger than people in seattle?  i dunno.)  i bought mine true to size (38) in the old-school regular fit and it’s perfect.  you can buy your very own right here at filson.com.

filson tin cloth cruiser jacket

filsoncruiser

denim jackets are a fall staple, but if you don’t think you can pull one off, consider this short cruiser jacket from filson.  it’s the perfect alternative to a levi’s trucker jacket.  it’s made from filson’s tough tin cloth with an oil finish which means it’s going to be stiff for the first several wears, but don’t be discouraged.  it will break in nicely and become one of your favorites in no time.

airport casual

photo

i went to the beach this past weekend with my old man.  i’ve got to hand it to him, he was the best dressed guy at the airport.  i snapped this photo right after we went through security.  he was rocking polo khakis, bean bluchers, a fjallraven greenland jacket, and carrying a filson briefcase.  bonus points for the scotty cameron scotty dog hat which he informed me was really hard to get.  excellent work, dad.

the perfect beach bag

i’m currently in summer vacation mode.  i need to hit the beach sooner than later.  one thing that’s essential for the beach is a good beach bag like this filson oil finished tote bag.  i’ve mentioned it a couple of times now, because it’s the perfect size to accommodate your towel, sunscreen, book, and a beer or two.

nyc work trip

i’m headed to new york tomorrow for a quick work trip.  i’ll be back on wednesday, so i’m packing light.  most of these items you’ve already seen on to take the train, but they’re worth mentioning again.  here’s what i’m wearing/packing for nyc:

brooks brothers navy fitzgerald two button suit – current my favorite suit that i own.

sid mashburn fox tie – a christmas gift that needs to be worn.  no time like the present.

sid mashburn button down shirt – i never leave home without a white button down.

tie bar from the tie bar – great entry point to the tie bar game.  can’t beat their prices.

gucci horsebit loafers – classic 1980s wall street.  these will be occupying my feet.

filson small duffle – the perfect overnight bag.  hands down.

i’m going to try to do a little shopping while i’m up there, but i’m not sure what kind of time i’m going to have.  i hope to come back with a good post and maybe some new kicks.

birthday loot

i turned 31 yesterday.  it was one of the best birthdays i can remember.  i had low-key celebration last night with my family who must read to take the train because their gifts were spot on.  they gave me a couple of shirts from j. crew and the filson levi’s trucker jacket i’ve been lusting after for the last year or so.  it’s incredible by the way.  they also got me a new filson dopp kit and the first five seasons of it’s always sunny in philadelphia (which i’m embarrassed to say i’ve never seen).  i’m headed to new york in two weeks, so i may treat myself to a little something for my birthday while i’m up there.  why the hell not?

holiday gift idea: filson tote bag

i can’t believe it’s december 7th.  i’m behind in my christmas shopping as well as my holiday gift ideas.  for the next couple of weeks, i’ll be posting some things that have caught my attention over the last year that would be good items to give or receive for christmas.  my first holiday gift suggestion is this filson oil finish tote bag.  filson’s website says it was designed for “hauling, shooting, and field gear”, but if you’re not into those things then you can use it as a work bag, a beach bag or a manly looking diaper bag.

quick word about drive

i recently saw drive.  it’s easily one of the best films of the year.  a couple of things worth noting: 1) the soundtrack is incredible – sets the mood of the film perfectly.  2) the scorpion jacket ryan gosling wears in the film is custom made and inspired by korean souvenir jackets from the 1950s.  3) the boots are a cap toe boot made by stacy adams.  4) the jean jacket is vintage levi’s.  5) his watch is a replica of a patek phillippe and currently not for sale.  5) the bag he uses in the film is a large filson duffle.  6) sunglasses are selima optique.

mackinaw cruiser vs the irvine jacket

the new j. crew catalog arrived sometime last week.  thumbing through it i noticed a jacket eerily similar to the filson mackinaw cruiser.  j. crew is calling it the irvine jacket (bottom pic).  it’s essentially the exact same jacket as filson’s.  it’s wool with chest flap pockets, handwarmer pockets, and buttons at the cuff.  it doesn’t look half bad, but i’d still go for the mackinaw cruiser.  filson’s been making their jacket since 1914;  j. crew since 2011.  no contest here.
