sale alert: penfield gibson

penfieldgibson

my favorite rain jacket is on sale at penfield.  the gibson.  sizes and colors are limited, but it’s marked down from $160 to $96.  that’s a steal.  i have the navy.  i ordered one in olive.  it’s pretty much the only rain jacket you’ll need all summer.

the hill-side wool camouflage tie

camo tie

i think we’re supposed to be finished camo (like as in 2 years ago), but i’m not there yet.  i mix it into the daily rotation from time to time.  even though i’m a banker, i don’t often wear a tie.  when i do, i make sure it counts which is why my next tie purchase will be this camo number from the hill-side.  it’s wool and made right here in the good ol us of a.  and congrats to the hill-side for being named one of gq’s best new menswear designers in america.

another ledbury plug

ledburyshirtz

“they’re such beautiful shirts,” she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds.  “it makes me sad because i’ve never seen such – such beautiful shirts before.”

-f. scott fitzgerald, the great gatsby

the other day my brother-in-law asked me for recommendations on a dress shirt.  the only one that came to mind was ledbury.  since i discovered ledbury, i haven’t bought anything but.  i had a lady come to my office and try to fit me in one of those made-to-fit brands and i told her it would take an act of congress for me to change brands.

i believe as you get older, you find brands you like and you stick with them.  my dad doesn’t buy anything but polo and brooks brothers.  it works for him.  in my limited time on this earth, i’ve found that ledbury dress shirts fit me the best.  one way i can tell they’re working for me is from the amount of compliments i get when i’m wearing one.  the blue shirt with the navy dots in the top right of this post averages 3 compliments per wear – true story – and that makes me feel good.

i’m not saying you should only buy ledbury shirts from here on out (you can if you want to).  what i’m saying is that when it comes to something as classic as a dress shirt, find a brand or two that you like and stick with them.  and be sure to buy quality, because they’ll last a lot longer.

if you’ve been sleeping under a rock and would like a little more info on ledbury, click here.  or if you want the cliffs notes, here you go: great story.  great brand.  great price.  great quality.

editor’s note: my father informed me last night that he now only buys ledbury shirts.  my apologies to brooks brothers and polo for the misinformation.

workout plan

stevemcqueenweights

guys, it’s almost beach time.  i’m headed to the promised land (30a beaches) in 2 months which means i have 2 months (duh) to get my fat ass in shape.  i’m probably one of the last people you should listen to when it comes to fitness advice – mainly because i can’t quit eating pancakes and drinking miller lite – but i have dropped 30 lbs since i got divorced and i feel f’ing great.  i’m going to go ahead and insert the “read more” tab, so if you’re interested in reading about what you can do to get in above average shape, read on.    Continue reading

signet rings

signet

there’s a nice blurb in gq this month regarding signet rings.  i’ve seen these popping up more and more over the last year or so.  i’m not big into man jewelry, but i’m down with this trend – especially if you can find a ring that tells a story (gift from your granddad or wife or whatever).  i would start with your initials and go from there.  one ring is enough.  any more and you’ll risk looking like an aging 1980’s rock star.

women we appreciate: jennifer lawrence

i’m rolling out a new feature on to take the train called “women we appreciate.”  it’s more or less an excuse to post a few pictures of well…a woman we appreciate.  first up is hunger games star jennifer lawrence.  she may be only 21, but she’s one of the most talented young actresses in hollywood (see 2010’s a winter’s bone).  the hunger games isn’t out until next friday march 23, but in the meantime enjoy a few tasteful pictures of the beautiful jennifer lawrence.

new tune tuesday: sleigh bells reign of terror

sleigh bells second album reign of terror is out today.  if you caught them on snl this past weekend, then you were greeted with a whole lot of noise.  it wasn’t the best performance i’ve ever heard, but that didn’t stop me from downloading the new album.  it’s exactly what you’d expect from the noise rockers: the guitars are turned up loud and the hand claps never seem to stop (which is not a bad thing).  i’m really diggin’ it.  i also love the album cover which i hope is a subtle shout out to the ramones (they wore keds).  bonus: be sure to check out their recent gq photo spread here (i’m a big fan of the levi’s trucker jacket).

the longshoreman necktie from the knottery

shame on me for not mentioning the knottery before now.  jay and jack make great looking ties, pocket squares, and belts that won’t hurt you wallet, but look like they did.  for this holiday season, they created a tie that looks an awful lot like a certain norwegian sweater you’ve been telling people you’ve had since the 80’s.  the best part about it – besides how incredible it looks – is the price.  you can get your own longshoreman necktie for $25.  you better place an order before it’s too late.

minka kelly in the new gq

i like the valentine’s day vibe.  derek jeter, you are a lucky man.

style icon: paul newman

i couldn’t decide whether or not to call paul newman a style icon or the coolest guy that ever walked the face of the planet.  newman made casual cool.  i’m not talking oversized sweat pants and hoodies.  i’m talking about fitted jeans and t-shirts.  newman was comfortable in his own skin and probably didn’t think too much about what he looked like to other people.  confidence is king when it comes to style and newman had it.
