happy masters week

mastershat

it’s masters week.  this has to be the best week of the year.  my dad and i hit the monday practice round.  i left with more loot than i probably should have including this vintage looking hat.  don’t quote me on this, but i believe they introduced it in 2013.  like the tour visors, it sells out quickly.  i did a little research (i.e. 15 second google search) to see if i could find a masters hat from the 70’s that looked like this one, but it appears to be a new design made to look vintage.  normally, i would scoff at something like this, but not this hat – i’m into it.

you didn’t ask, but i’m going to give you my picks this year.  i think bubba wins again.  he was drilling the ball on monday.  tough to bet against him.  if you’re looking for some wildcards, check out hideki matsuyama, branden grace, gary woodland, and russell henley.

taylor stitch x ebbet’s field california bear ballcap

i snoozed on these last week and missed the boat on the navy and white.  i opted for the black and white instead of the more adventurous options e.g. royal and red, grey and black, and black and orange.  these are the signature ebbets field flannel wool ballcaps made for taylor stitch featuring an adjustable leather strap and the california bear (i friggin’ love california).  i can’t do fitted hats any more.  and in case you haven’t noticed, i have a small obsession with ebbets field flannel ballcaps.  they fit my noggin better than any other brand.

born in the usa / bruce springsteen kit

bruce springsteen’s 17th album wrecking ball is out today.  i’ve heard a few tracks from it.  it sounds like vintage bruce.  i’m excited to give it a spin this morning.  springsteen occupied the jimmy fallon show last week by playing a couple of new tunes and dressing up like born in the usa bruce (you can check that out here).  i can’t say that born in the usa is my favorite boss album, but it’s hard to argue with the all-american style of it’s iconic cover.  here’s a tiny tribute to it in the form of a kit:

j. crew broken-in pocket tee – you can save a lot of laundry detergent by buying an already broken-in t-shirt.

red yankees hat – that’s a red baseball hat in bruce’s pocket and not a bandana.  it was given to him by his buddy lance larson.  bruce put it his back pocket as a tribute to larson’s late father.

levi’s shrink to fit 501 jeans – fact: levi’s sales went through the roof after this album came out.

braided belt – i would not recommend a bedazzled belt like bruce is wearing on the cover.

frye engineer boots – the boss wears fryes.  who knew.  who also knew that frye is one of the world’s oldest bootmakers.  not me.

fender telecaster – i have a tele.  i f**king love it.

“i’m a long gone daddy in the usa.”

the i’ll be home for christmas kit

christmas day is my favorite day of the year.  i’m spoiled to have most of my family here in nashville, so we all head over to my parents house to open presents and eat brunch.  it’s the one day of the year my mom cooks.  she makes the most amazing french toast i’ve ever had.  here’s what i’ll be sporting come sunday morning:

j. crew fair isle sweater – one of the better looking sweaters i’ve seen this year

danner mountain trail boots – the most badass hiking boots you will find.  period.  size down a half.

grown & sewn heavy foundation trousers – pants that are cut like your favorite denim.  on sale now for $99.

mitchell & ness chicago bears script hat – the original version of this hat starred in the movie christmas vacation.  you might have seen it.

apple iPad 2 – i don’t leave home without it.  instant entertainment when everyone is taking their christmas naps.

rawhide dog bone – how else are you supposed to keep your dog occupied while you’re eating and opening presents?  might need a couple of them.

i hope every one has a great holiday.  i’ll be blogging on and off for the next couple of days.

hemingway in the winter

if i had to outline my life in phases, there would be three worth mentioning: the indiana jones phase (years 6-13); the beatles/brit pop phase (years 13-17); and the ernest hemingway phase (years 18-30).  reading hemingway is like getting punched in the gut and enjoying it.  it’s eye opening.  no one lives like hemingway any more; you couldn’t get away with it – which is why we spend time reading and re-reading his stories.  there’s a part of every man that wants to live those adventures.

hemingway knew how to dress.  i found a photo of him kicking a can in the snow (next page) and realized there was some great pictures of him dressed for the winter.  he valued a lot of the same things we do now like heavy wool pants, leather boots, plaid shirts, and shawl collar sweaters.  some things never go out of style and for good reason.  i only wish i could have found a few more photos.  check them out on the next page.

holiday gift idea: penfield sanford bobble beanie

in case you haven’t noticed, i’m a big penfield fan.  they make some great stuff like this sanford bobbled beanie.  if you know someone headed skiing over the holidays, this hat would make a perfect gift.

cold weather running gear

now that college football is over it’s time to get my ass off the couch and start running again.  running on the treadmill is great, but you can’t beat the great outdoors – even when it’s freezing outside.  here’s what you’ll need to stay warm running this winter:

new balance windblocker jacket: it’s windproof, waterproof, and made with lightning dry fabric that will help wick away the moisture.

under armour cold gear compression shirt: like long underwear but tighter and warmer.

nike wool running hat: you’ll need something to cover your head and ears like this dri-fit wool running hat from nike.

drymax cold weather running socks: drymax are my favorite running socks.  their cold weather socks have a dual layer moisture removal system that instantly moves moisture from the skin.

under armour compression leggings: the best protection for your legs in cold weather.  i’ll usually throw on a pair of shorts over them, so no one has to look at my junk.

nike lightweight running gloves: you can’t forget about your hands when running in cold weather.  plus, ladies don’t like men with chaffed hands.

asics gt-2160 running shoes: my new favorite running shoes.  they’re the perfect mix of stability and comfort.

now all you’ve got to do is find the time to get started.  good luck!

the sandlot plus cap

last week i saw very curious tweet from imogene + willie asking if any of their followers had kids with little league practice coming up.  this week i found out why.  they put together their own little league squad to introduce their new collaboration with ebetts field: the sandlot plus cap.  it’s like the plus cap they released last winter but this one is made of faded grey/blue cotton instead of heavy wool.  it also features an adjustable leather strap so you don’t have to worry about what hat size you are.  head over to their site to see the little leaguers show off their skills and to get yourself one of these fresh ball caps.  i love saying ball cap.

masters loot

i’m back from my week long journey.  it’s good to be home.  on thursday morning at 7:40 am i watched jack nicklaus and arnold palmer open the masters golf tournament by hitting the first two balls off the first tee.  it was an incredible sight to see arguably the two greatest golfers ever on the same tee in the flesh.  after they walked off the tee, we hit the masters gift shop.  i’ve been lucky enough to attend the tournament a couple of times now, so this year i knew what i was looking for: a navy pullover, a green hat, a red golf shirt, and a tie.  success.  i was in and out of there in 5 minutes.

there’s no telling how much money augusta national racks up on merchandise during the week of the masters.  when you’re in the gift shop, you’re not just shopping for yourself; you’re shopping for you and the 10 other people that have asked you to get them something.  it feels like black friday with people running around grabbing everything in sight and heading to the check out lanes.  there’s also the fear that you’ll never be back, so you might as well buy everything this trip.

what is it about masters gear that’s so special?  well, you can’t get it anywhere else.  it’s not for sale online and i bet it never will be.  it’s like a secret club.  inevitably someone will notice the logo and ask you if you’ve been.  i’ve never seen an item of clothing spark more conversation than something with the masters logo on it.  sadly, if you asked me my favorite part about the masters, golf would come in third behind the sandwiches (post to come) and the merchandise.  money well spent.
