superga classics

the first time i saw a pair of superga sneakers i was in 8th grade.  one of my friends had invited a french exchange student to live with her for a few months and these were the only shoes she packed.  i thought they were some of the most heinous sneakers i had ever seen – which means they were destined to be cool 15 years later.  honestly, they’re probably still not “cool,” but I’m not worried about it.  they’re incredibly comfortable, easy on the wallet and you can throw them in the washing machine when they start to stink.  who knows maybe i won’t look like a tourist when i finally book that trip to europe.  you can buy your very own here.

the talented mr. ripley

this is the summer of the italian revolution.  the blogs that used to talk about work wear and americana have traded in their red wings for a pair of double monk strap shoes.  this is not necessarily a bad thing.  the italians have been dressing the same way since the beginning of the 20th century and they do it so well.  one film that showcases italian style is the talented mr. ripley set it 1955 and starring matt damon and jude law.  i watched it for the first time last night and enjoyed the style and scenery aspects of the film, but not necessarily the story (it’s pretty messed up).  my favorite part of the film was freddie miles’ (philip seymour hoffman) 1955 alfa romeo guiletta spider convertible.  i’m not necessarily a car person, but it’s in my genetic makeup as a male to love old cars and mr. ripley has several worth mentioning.  rather than grainy screen grabs, i figured i’d post a few of my favorites from images i stole via google (my apologies if they belong to you).

only picture i’ll be posting from pitti uomo

pitti uomo was held last week and the internet is full of wonderful pictures from it.  the picture above is the only one i’ll be posting.  navy chinos and brown wallabees are a look i will be stealing this fall.  for more inspiration and pics, click here.

run of the mill double monk strap shoes

the men’s style blogosphere blew up last week when lawrence from sartorially inclined dropped his run of the mill double monk strap shoes.  i’ll admit i didn’t get hip to double monk straps until i started following sartorially inclined a year or so ago.  in fact, i emailed lawrence while i was in new york last month and asked where i could find some double monk straps for somewhere in between $250-$400.  he said i probably couldn’t find any on the cheap and to wait until his “dub monks” were on the market next month.  well, they’re officially here and available for pre-order.  i think they look fantastic.  the shoes were made in one of the finest ready-to-wear shoe factories in italy.  they also kept the design simple by using a more rounded last which is not as aggressive as some of the pointier double monks on the market.  if you’re thinking about buying a pair of double monks, this is a great entry point.  review to come when they get delivered.
