another ledbury plug

“they’re such beautiful shirts,” she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds.  “it makes me sad because i’ve never seen such – such beautiful shirts before.”

-f. scott fitzgerald, the great gatsby

the other day my brother-in-law asked me for recommendations on a dress shirt.  the only one that came to mind was ledbury.  since i discovered ledbury, i haven’t bought anything but.  i had a lady come to my office and try to fit me in one of those made-to-fit brands and i told her it would take an act of congress for me to change brands.

i believe as you get older, you find brands you like and you stick with them.  my dad doesn’t buy anything but polo and brooks brothers.  it works for him.  in my limited time on this earth, i’ve found that ledbury dress shirts fit me the best.  one way i can tell they’re working for me is from the amount of compliments i get when i’m wearing one.  the blue shirt with the navy dots in the top right of this post averages 3 compliments per wear – true story – and that makes me feel good.

i’m not saying you should only buy ledbury shirts from here on out (you can if you want to).  what i’m saying is that when it comes to something as classic as a dress shirt, find a brand or two that you like and stick with them.  and be sure to buy quality, because they’ll last a lot longer.

if you’ve been sleeping under a rock and would like a little more info on ledbury, click here.  or if you want the cliffs notes, here you go: great story.  great brand.  great price.  great quality.

editor’s note: my father informed me last night that he now only buys ledbury shirts.  my apologies to brooks brothers and polo for the misinformation.

black friday: ledbury

Screen Shot 2013-11-29 at 11.38.37 AM

i’m not a black friday shopping kind of dude, but i don’t mind saving money when i get the chance.  one sale that you can’t miss today is at ledbury.  all of their shirts are 35% off.  that’s insane.  i bought 3 this morning, because last year i tried to get in on this goodness and missed the boat on every shirt in my size.  get over there now and stock up while you can.  here’s one i copped:

that’s what i’m talkin’ ’bout.

ledbury swim trunks

ledburyswim

don’t worry, it’s not too late in the summer for a new pair of trunks.  if you’re a fan or ledbury (and even if you’re not), you need to check out their new hilliard swim trunks.  there’s a nice little story about the idea behind the swim trunks that can be found here on their blog.  but if you’re not into reading, then know that they’re not too baggy and not too slim, they’re made of nylon, and they hit slightly above the knee.  what more do you need in a swim trunk?  you can cop a pair here.

ledbury nashville lookbook featuring ron samuels

Nashville7

ledbury was in nashville last week shooting for their nashville themed lookbook and short run collection.  one of the individuals they picked for the shoot was my old man, ron samuels.  he’s been one of my style icons for as long as i can remember.  the dude is a sharp dresser.  you can head over to ledbury and see the whole lookbook featuring max and ben goldberg of the patternson house and other excellent restaurants and bars, phillip nappi of peter nappi, and my buddy jay wilkison of imogene + willie.  and don’t forget about the ledbury pop-up shop this friday and saturday at the peter nappi studio.

my christmas list

xmaslist2012

we still make christmas lists in my family.  (how else are people supposed to know what to get you.)  i had a hard time coming up with a list this year.  i have everything i need and want in the world, so it came down to a few things that i’ve been hesitant about buying and a few things i could always use.  here it is in no particular order:

fjallraven greenland jacket: i can’t figure out why i don’t have this jacket yet

ipad mini: i have the ipad 2, but i’m ready to ditch it for something a little smaller.

ebbet’s field flannel twill ballcap: i bought a red one this summer and love it.  i need another one to add to the rotation.

camp socks: they will keep your feet warm in the colder months.

jawbone jambox wireless speakers: best bluetooth speakers on the market.

glenn o’brien’s book how to be a man: i’m a big fan of the style guy, but haven’t read his book yet.  shame on me.

patagonia kleen kanteen: we went green at work.  no more bottles of water.

ledbury shirts: i want them all.

titleist velocity golfballs: i should probably be playing pro v1s, but i really like these.

dog bones: it’s christmas for riley too.

pretzel m&m’s: my weakness.

for dudes who don’t like clothes

i went to a party a couple of weeks ago where word got out that i had a “lifestyle” blog.  it was first referred to as a “fashion” blog, but there is nothing fashionable about to take the train.  i also wouldn’t call it a “lifestyle” blog.  it’s a place where i like to post things i’m interested in.  not a big deal, right?  well, you know how dudes are.  we can’t talk to other dudes about clothes and shoes, because that’s what chicks talk about.  i’m not sure why dudes are so scared to talk about clothes with other dudes.  they’ve been essential since the fall of man (unless you are in fact a nudist and clothes are not part of your daily routine).  one gentleman at the party asked me about his attire and what he should do differently.  i’m not an expert, so i tried to avoid the issue.  i just know what i like to wear; i can’t tell you what’s going to look good on you.  with that said, i put together some inoffensive suggestions for those of you that are not interested in hashtag menswear or pretend like you don’t read style blogs.  here’s where you can find the items above: j. crew cords, ledbury shirt, leather plaque belt, billykirk wallet,  and clarks desert boots.

buy this shirt

i own one ledbury shirt and that’s not enough.  thank goodness for email marketing.  an e-mail with a picture of this bad boy in it hit my inbox sometime last week and i had to have it.  it’s the perfect shirt for the weekdays or weekends this summer.  if you haven’t purchased a shirt from ledbury yet, this would be a good one to start with.  i’m becoming a big fan.

first impression: ledbury

i’ve been hearing about ledbury since they started making shirts.  a friend of mine went to washington & lee with paul and paul.  i remember when he called me to tell me their story.  if you haven’t read it, you can find it here.  it’s incredible.  he urged me to order a couple of shirts, because they were about to blow up.  he was right.  over the past few years, ledbury have been mentioned in every men’s magazine i read and almost every blog on my google reader.  last week, i found out why.  their shirts are perfect.  they’re made with less fabric in the waist and torso to create a slimming effect aka a perfect fit without being “slim-fit.”  when you’re used to billowy brooks brothers dress shirts, it’s a welcome change.  most of my future dress shirts will now come from ledbury.  keep up the good work, pauls.

spring shirt options: ledbury

i first heard about ledbury from a friend that went to school with one of their founders.  he talked about them so much that i finally asked if he had some stake in the company.  he might have, but that’s not the reason he wanted me to buy one he told me.  he kept talking about the quality and the fit and the collars.  he said these guys know their s**t.  they learned from one of the best shirt makers in europe.  he was right.  now ledbury is blowing up like crazy.  you can find them on any men’s style blog or in any men’s magazine.  they’ve added a couple of new shirts for the spring.  here are some of my favorites:
