need: blundstone boots

blundstonesi’ve been traveling a ton lately – not that i’m complaining because i love to travel.  when we’re in a new city, we tend to walk somewhere around 8-10 miles per day which means you gotta have the right footwear on to make that happen.  most trips you can find me in my red wing iron rangers, but lately they’ve become a bit heavy and uncomfortable.  oh, and you have to take them off in airport security even if you’re pre-check because of the metal.  it’s annoying.

i’ve been doing a little research for some new travel boots.  my main criteria are as follows: light, comfortable, and an easy transition from day to night.  enter the blundstone 500 series.  these are the classic australian work boots that can take a beating during the day and not get you kicked out of a nice restaurant at night (well, maybe not super nice but they’re not nikes ok).

i’ll confess, i bought a pair several years ago, but returned them do to sizing issues.  i ended up never buying the bigger size.  it might be time to try again.  i’ve heard only good things about them.  anybody have any experience with these?  if you’re debating between the 500 and 550, this dude made a really great video regarding the subtle differences.  really great job, youtube reviewer.

once again the baracuta g9

baracutanavy

i hope you know this jacket.  if you don’t know it, get to know it.  behold the baracuta g9.  it’s a classic.  i’ve blogged about it at least 3 times now.  yeah, it’s expensive as hell.  and yeah, it’s pretty basic, but it’s a jacket you need to own.  while everyone else is out there in last year’s bomber, you can carve your own path in the g9.

here’s the skinny on sizing: it’s slim fit.  here’s the other skinny on sizing: the size measurements are uk sizing.  what does that mean?  it means a 38 is not an american 38.  it fits more like an american 34-36.  size up.  if your jacket size is a 38, you’re going to need a 40 or 42.  want more proof?  i stole the graphic below straight from their website.  don’t say i didn’t warn you.

the ugliest shoes you’ll see all season

mhhp

this page in men’s health starts with “here’s one way to guarantee that every man will want to walk a mile in your shoes.”  excuse me.  what?  are we talking about the shoes listed under that copy.  if we are in fact talking about those shoes, then maybe it’s time to check yourself.  these are the ugliest shoes i’ve seen in a long time.  look it’s not my thing to get on here and crap all over someone’s design or product (i’m not qualified to do so), but these do not pass the eye test.  purple + back + gray camo = something bebop and rocksteady would wear on tmnt.  they’re also listed as “the mh must-have.”  really?  we, the readers of men’s health magazine, must have these shoes.  c’mon man.  you can do better than that, men’s health.  (please note the brand is not named to protect the guilty party.)

hoof pick belt round up

the new year is a great time to pick up a new belt.  if you’re trying to lose the extra pounds you added during the holidays, buy one in the size you’d like to be in a few months.  #menswear is the ultimate motivator.  i’m a big fan of the hoof pick belt.  it’s a nice alternative to the sid mashburn joint i’ve been rocking for the past year.  i found a few of my favorites at different price ranges.  from top to bottom: apolis, hickorees, the knottery, and orvis.

you can’t go wrong with any of those.

holiday gift idea: sid mashburn fox tie

i deviated from the plan this morning.  the plan was to mention the above tie as a nice holiday gift suggestion, but when i went to sid’s website and saw the new double monks, it was game over.  now that the double monks are out of the way, we can get back on track.  the next item on my christmas list is this fox tie from sid mashburn.  why?  because sid makes extremely nice silk ties and foxes are one of my favorite animals.  the green is currently sold out, but the navy one looks just as good.  ties aren’t such bad gifts after all.

shout out to valet

i went to order a new pair of rubber mocs yesterday and noticed the shout out to valet on l.l. bean’s website.  it reads “as seen in valet magazine, october 2011.”  that small mention made me very happy for their team.  i’ve been reading valet since 2008 (i think) and wouldn’t have a blog or be interested in half the stuff i’m interested in without them.  they do such an incredible job of helping dudes like me find cool things on the internet.  i would guess that most of my readership has come from valet’s generous mentions of to take the train via their morning report.  if you’re not checking out valet everyday then you need to be.  keep up the good work and thanks for all you do.

only picture i’ll be posting from pitti uomo

pitti uomo was held last week and the internet is full of wonderful pictures from it.  the picture above is the only one i’ll be posting.  navy chinos and brown wallabees are a look i will be stealing this fall.  for more inspiration and pics, click here.

happy presidents’ day

i had the day off today.  i played golf this morning, had lunch with friends, and then went to the movies by myself.  i’m sure our founding fathers would approve of how i spent my presidents day.  i hope you’re having as good of a day as i’ve had (even if you had to work).

i’m willing to bet 8 out of 10 men’s style bloggers are mentioning something about jfk today and how he’s the most stylish president we’ve ever had.  i’m not going to disagree.  obama is a nice dresser, but jfk is the man when it comes to presidential style – skinny ties, slim-cut charcoal suits for work and ray-bans, rolled-up khakis and oxford shirts for the weekend.  these iconic looks are still relevant in 2011.

on the next page are a few of my favorite shots of him and his impeccable style.  you’ve probably seen them 100 times by now, but i figured i might as well get into the presidents’ day spirit by posting them.  enjoy.   Continue reading

the hoof pick belt

dreams of perfection is one of my daily reads.  paul does a great job with men’s style in the south.  one of my favorite picks of his is the hoof pick belt.  i’ve had the same belt for the last 7 years.  it’s time for an upgrade.  at $30 there’s no reason this shouldn’t be my next belt.  if you have a little extra time today, check out dreams of perfection.  it’s a great read.
