the interstellar jacket

INTERSTELLAR

i saw interstellar last night.  i then stayed up for the remainder of the evening trying to decode it.  i still haven’t figured it out which is not to say that it’s not a good movie.  it is a good movie.  it’s just thought provoking and complicated and exhausting.  if you’re not into that, there’s always dumb and dumber to.

as far as menswear is concerned, there’s really only one item of clothing worth mentioning: mcconaughey’s carhartt jacket.  it’s been a working man’s staple for as long as i can remember.  i had a buddy from college who wore this exact jacket year round.  he was also a peanut farmer.  my guess is that you are not a peanut farmer and that’s ok.  it shouldn’t deter from purchasing your own interstellar jacket (there’s a reason it’s been around so long).  just make sure to throw some dirt on yours or run over it with your car before taking a test run around your city.  and in case you were wondering, his boots were red wing iron rangers (not that i notice those kinds of things).

here it is: the great gatsby trailer

the trailer for the great gatsby was released last night. i wanted to turn it off after 30 seconds. actually, i wanted to find baz luhrmann and give him a piece of my mind. what has he done? why did he do it? he took America’s greatest novel and turned it into a spectacle. when I think of the roaring twenties, surprisingly i don’t think of kanye and jay-z’s “church in the wild.” i think about jazz and flappers and stock markets crashing. where is that in the trailer? where the hell is the jazz?

i’ve read the book over 10 times. i’ve memorized the opening and final pages. fitzgerald’s writing speaks to me better than any other author i’ve ever read. the way he describes women and love and loss is the way i would want to if i was a great writer. the themes of this novel resonate with anyone who’s wanted a shot at the american dream. we want things we can’t have, but we spend our whole lives trying to find them or make them right. everyone has a “daisy” whether they’ll admit it or not.

i saw esquire’s tweet calling the film possibly the most stylish movie ever. that’s great, but where is the story? baz luhrmann’s biggest problem as a director is telling a story. moulin rouge was candy for your eyes, but not for your brain. storytelling used to be an important piece of film making. i’m not sure where it went. hey hollywood, sometimes bigger is not better. i was excited about this film and ready to give luhrmann another shot after sitting through australia, but i can’t watch this movie – especially not in 3-D as it’s intended to be viewed…”so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”

baractua: coming soon to a theater near you

hollywood’s had a long standing relationship with the baracuta harrington jacket dating back to elvis in the movie king creole in 1958.  since then, hollywood has reintroduced the jacket from generation to generation.  in the 1960’s, steve mcqueen made the jacket legendary in the thomas crown affair.  in the 80’s, michael keaton wore one in mr. mom, and a few years later, clark kent (christopher reeve) used the jacket to hide his real identity as superman in the film of the same name.  it’s been 20+ years since those films and the time for reintroduction is apparently now.

most fashion savvy bloggers have had their baracuta ever since they discovered steve mcqueen and bought their first pair of desert boots, but the rest of the population hasn’t quite caught on.  that might not be the case after this fall.  i’m starting to see an uptick in the coverage the jacket is getting on our tv and movie screens.  i noticed one earlier this year in the hangover part 2.  i’ve also seen it in previews for the new season of bored to death and the upcoming blockbuster killer elite.  no matter where you see it this fall, it’s still as classic and iconic as it’s ever been.  i’d say welcome back, but it hasn’t really gone anywhere.

weekend review

this picture sums up my entire weekend.  my wife was out of town so i spent my whole saturday in this leather chair due to the rain (notice the bean boots).  i watched 3 movies, a basketball game, and saturday night live.  i think i took this picture late saturday night after a couple of whiskey drinks and a few beers.  i was trying to take a picture of the guitar because it’s a beautiful beautiful thing, but the rest of the room fit.  quiet weekends like these are my favorite (but with my wife in town of course).
