callaway great big bertha epic driver

gbbepic

yesterday afternoon i went to get fitted for a new callaway great big bertha epic driver.  the reviews on this driver are better than any other driver i can remember reading about.  it’s supposed to increase ball speed, smash factor, distance, etc.  for lack of a better term, it’s supposed to be epic.  (nice job callaway on the name.)

anyway, i hit it for about an hour.  i tried 6 different shafts – including the same one i’m hitting with in my m2 – and the numbers were about the same across the board.  sadly, my spin rate increased with the gbb epic.  i don’t get it.  the reviews said my life would be forever changed.  i wanted to leave with a new driver on order.

i’m going to give it another test run in a couple of months once my spring / summer swing comes back and the weather warms up.  the club pro also recommended i try it with their callaway rep because they carry a lot more shaft options than the club.

i’m not giving up yet, but my first go with the callaway gbb epic was a bit of a disappointment.  i love the look of it and the muted sound it makes when you hit the center of the club.  the numbers just weren’t there.  i’ll post a follow up when i try it again in a couple of months.  until then, i’ll keep chugging along with my 2016 taylormade m2 which is pretty damn epic as well.

red wing weekender chukka boots

redwingweekender1.png

are you sick of your clarks desert boots yet?  i was, so i searched for an alternative and low and behold i found these red wing weekender chukka boots.  since i don’t blog as much as i used to and/or keep up as much as i used to, i didn’t know these were a thing, but they are.  they’re solid shoes for the summer when you have to wear pants.  the only thing is that they’re wide as hell, so if you have a narrow foot, go for a size down.  if you have a wide foot go a half size down.  break in time is less than a full day in them.  nice job red wing.  get yours at todd snyder.

j. crew suiting

jcrewbluesuit

hello.  how are you?  it’s been a minute since i posted something on here.  i am truly sorry.  i wish i could promise more posts on the reg, but 2016 has proven to be a crazy year.  for example, i met an amazing girl, my company was bought by another company, i’m getting a new dog, i lost 20 lbs…and a billion of other things that you’re probably not overly concerned with.  one thing that i’ve done that might pique your interest is update my suiting game at the request of the wonderful woman i am dating.

when i first met alex, i was repping a couple a couple of brooks brothers suits that i’ll admit i thought looked pretty good.  they were tailored albeit a little loose after the weight drop, but again i didn’t think they looked that bad.  i was wrong.  we met for lunch one day and while going to grab us water i turned around to find her staring at me.  without saying these exact words, she pretty much said, “that thing looks horrid and i will never eat lunch with you again if you continue to wear suits like that.”  point taken.  it was time to get a new suit.   Continue reading

thread experiment

threadex1

so this is awesome.  thread experiment is the very first brand of bedding dedicated to men.  why is this awesome?  because dudes need nice sheets (and other bedding).  i’ve been looking for the perfect sheets for a couple of years now.  being a man, i have absolutely no clue where to buy sheets or what to look for in a sheet.  in addition, it’s not something that dudes talk about.  “hey bro, where do you buy your sheets?”  no, not a good conversation to have.  i’ve settled on pottery barn’s essential sheet and they’ve been great, but i need a little more flavor in the bedroom if you know what i’m saying.  enter thread experiment.  they are high quality sheets at a nice price – some of them even have dope designs like these anchor sheets (below).  i’m going to give them a shot and hope to be a repeat customer.  thank you to all parties involved for creating bedding directed towards men.

*update: i bought a set of these sheet.  i hate them.  my girlfriend hates them.  if my dog were allowed on the bed, she would hate them too.  they are hard as f**k i.e. not soft.  do not buy them.

modern romance

azizmodern

some of you may have read my dating rant post a couple of weeks ago (it can be found here).  in the comments, brosen recommended i pick up aziz ansari’s new book modern romance because it tackled some of my frustrations.  i finished it yesterday.  thank you for the recommendation.

for those not in the know, aziz was asked to write a book and decided to take a look at the dating landscape in the age of technology hence modern romance.  he did a years plus worth of research teaming with sociologists and other behavioral specialists to try and figure out what the hell is happening out there.  it’s really well put together with the perfect amount of scientific data and aziz humor.

there are so many great parts in this book.  he starts his research by going to a retirement home to poll seniors on how they met their significant others.  (one of the seniors just wanted free donuts.)  he asks people at his stand up shows to share their texts and interactions with potentials dates.  (generic “hey” texts are not cool.)  he also traveled to tokyo, paris and a few other spots to see if dating is any easier abroad.  (glad to know what a soapland is.)

it’s a quick read and highly entertaining.  it definitely made me feel better to know that more people are in the same boat as me i.e confused and frustrated.  by the way, i’m never texting a girl for a first date ever again.  i will always call from here on out.  maybe i can share that story for dating again part 4 which might be coming soon.

new tune tuesday with jack white

there was a point in my life when jack white could do no wrong.  he reached “genius” level after 2003’s elephant, but then out of nowhere the white stripes broke up.  i assured myself that everything was going to be ok, because white was the driving force behind that band.  shortly after the break up, white moved to nashville and formed the raconteurs with indie favorite brendan benson.  the album came out and didn’t meet expectations.  don’t get me wrong, it was decent, but not stripes caliber.  after the raconteurs, white formed the dead weather with the lady from the kills.  the music was solid, but lyrics and vocals weren’t enough to fill the void left by the white stripes.  in my opinion, jack’s problem was trying to showcase the talent around him instead of his own.

good news: he’s back.  white’s first solo album blunderbuss was released today and it’s a throwback to the white stripes days of old with heavier piano and a few nashville instruments thrown in the mix (fiddle, mandolin, steel pedal).  i’m one spin down and really diggin’ it so far.  one of my friends nailed the description: “it’s not as raw as the stripes, but not as polished as the raconteurs.”  i couldn’t agree more.  it’s good to have jack back at the center of the music.

also released today: ryan adams itunes session.  he plays a whiskeytown song.  seriously.

red clay soul & to take the train black friday loot

you might remember that i ordered a penfield outback vest last month in british green.  it’s become a weekend staple of mine since it arrived (i never leave home without it).  a week or so later, i saw a tweet from jrs of red clay soul saying that he had seen the cobalt colored vest at sid mashburn’s and that it looked phenomenal.  my interest were piqued.  i responded to his tweet that maybe i made mistake in my color selection.  fast forward to black friday: jrs sends me a direct message asking if i wanted to split 20% off the cobalt vest via penfield’s website.  it took a matter of seconds for me to say “hell yes.”  the vest arrived this week and jay has posted an excellent review over at red clay soul.  please check it out.  these pictures belong to him (obviously since they’re 100x better than my originals).  thanks again for cutting me in on your black friday loot, jay.

the alden indy boot

i’ve wanted these indy boots for over 3 years now.  i’ve been to new york twice during this time with the intention to buy a pair at the alden store on madison avenue.  i chickened out both times after trying them on.  i told the guys working there that i would order a pair when i got back to nashville.  i finally made good on that promise last month when a friend of mine told me he knew one of the gentlemen that worked at that store (shout out to curt who took excellent care of me).

it only took me two tries to get the size right.  i measure a 9.5 on a brannock device and went a half size down as instructed.   the 9 felt huge on my feet, so i returned and reordered an 8.5.  they fit like a glove.  these are by far some of the nicest boots i will ever own.  they’re every bit worth the wait and money.  i can’t wait to break them in; although, i probably won’t let them get as destroyed as indiana jones’:

new tune monday

three albums of note were released today.  i’m starting to like these monday releases.  looks like kanye and jay-z started a new trend with watch the throne.  who’s decision was it to release stuff on tuesdays anyway?  monday makes a lot more sense.  here’s what i’m downloading:

red hot chili peppers i’m with you.  the red hot chili peppers are one of my all-time favorite bands, so any time they release a new album, i’m buyin’.  i was worried they wouldn’t sound as good without guitarist john frusciante, but new axe-man josh klinghoffer takes over admirably.  initial reaction: better than 2006’s stadium arcadium.

lil wayne tha carter iv.  this is one i’ve been excited about for a while.  tha carter iii and da drought 3 were on constant rotation in my car in 2007/2008.  i stayed away from last years rebirth – figuring rap rock should have died with limp bizkit – so i’m expecting big things from this release.  besides the singles (“john”, “she will”, “6 foot 7 foot”, “how to love”), i haven’t heard anything else.  i’ll let you know how it is, but if you’re a lil tunechi fan then you’ve probably already heard it, baby.

david guetta nothing but the beatdon’t judge.  guetta is a guilty pleasure.  i realize this is the a-hole responsible for “i’ve got a feeling” but don’t hold that against him.  dude’s got talent.  i’m loving the lead single “where them girls at” mainly because nicki minaj is a mutha-f**king monster.  great running music.
