2016 wish list: black double monks

sidmonksblack1

it’s been a minute since i’ve talked about double monks.  that doesn’t mean i’m not wearing them once or twice a week.  i have a pair of brown ones, but i think it’s time to go to the dark side (sorry couldn’t resist a star wars reference).  i wear a suit to work every day, so i need to continue to add to my shoe arsenal.  my target is another pair of monks from sid mashburn.  they don’t get any better looking than these.

sid mashburn moto jacket

sidmoto

i need a new leather jacket.  i’m currently selling my old one on ebay (long story).  this motorcycle jacket from sid mashburn is the perfect candidate to replace the other one.  the write-up on sid’s website said they were tired of searching for the “perfect” leather jacket, so they made their own.  it’s brown cowhide (obviously) rather than black which means it goes with more things in your closet.  it’s also slim fit with no chest pockets to give it more of a tailored look.  i like it.  i just need the old jacket to go ahead and sell so i can jump on this one before they sell out (it’s a limited run).

the sid mashburn navy blazer

navy-blue-blazer_01

sid mashburn’s email campaign is a cut above the rest (which is not surprising in the least bit).  a couple of weeks ago, he sent out an email on the navy blazer.  if you clicked on the link, it takes you to a page that goes into great detail regarding the fabric, the cut and the construction of this timeless jacket.  there’s also an 8 minute video of sid discussing the importance of the navy blazer.  he calls it “every man’s coat.”  i tend to agree.  if you don’t have a go-to navy blazer in your closet, then you need to save your nickels and dimes and go pick up one up.  holiday party season is coming.  why not impress your friends and the ladies by showing up in a new tailored navy blazer.

here again is the link to sid’s page.  it’s worth checking out.  trust me.  at the bottom of the page he has several pictures of when and how to wear the navy blazer (example below).  excellent work.

fall wish list: suede chelsea boots

mashchelsea1

fall is just around the corner.  fall is just around the corner.  fall is just around the corner.  if i say it enough, then maybe it will get here sooner.  it’s been 98º this weekend in nashville.  i’ve had enough.  it’s time for fall.  first thing on my fall wish list is a pair of suede chelsea boots like these from sid mashburn.  these particular boots have been on my wish list for a couple of years now, but the time feels right to finally make the purchase.  the plan is to hit atlanta sometime in september (braves game anyone?).  these will be coming back with me.

mcqueen on set

mscquuenonset2.1

this picture needs no explanation.  there was no one cooler than steve mcqueen.  few guys can pull off the white v-neck t-shirt quite like mcqueen did in between takes on the set of bullitt.  but, hey, if you want to try, here’s a good starting point:

need new sunglasses

north by

i haven’t updated my sunglasses in at least 2 years.  i’ve found a ton i like online, but sunglasses are one of those things you want to buy in person, so you can awkwardly make “cool” faces in the tiny store mirror (that was a joke by the way).  i’m embarrassed to say i spent more than hour trying to find a new pair of sunglasses today.  i started by googling this picture.  cary grant’s tart optical “arnel” shades in north by northwest are thing of perfection.  sadly, i was too lazy to call the store to check the price, so i went to warby parker’s website and did the virtual try-on.  i soon discovered the virtual try-on looks a lot better for reading glasses, because every pair of sunglasses i tried on made me look like doc ock from spider-man.  my next stop was j.crew’s accessory section, but most of the shades were too ray-ban or too expensive.  i was running out of options until i remembered sid mashburn started carrying allyn scura sunglasses sometime last year.  score.  after a ton of back and forth between grey and dark tortoise, i settled on the gray beauts you see below.  i can’t wait to rock these at the beach this july 4th.  ladies, holla at me.

how to fold a pocket square

i grabbed this “how to fold a pocket square” guide from the bearings newsletter.  it’s the best graphic i’ve seen on the subject.  the pocket square is essential for most menswear enthusiast.  if you want a good beginner’s pocket square, look no further than sidmashburn.com.  i would start with the $25 white hem stitch pocket square you see below.  if you’re into it, then you can get creative from there.  the world is your oyster.

jake davis test shots: sid mashburn

jake davis does great work.  if you’ve never seen his blog, you can check it out here.  every couple of weeks, he posts a “test shot” of someone he admires – which is basically a minute long, slow motion video of said individual set to cool music.  his latest test shot of sid mashburn is his best in my opinion.  i love jake’s description of sid:

from spending the afternoon with sid it’s very clear how much he loves, not just designing clothes, but the people that wear his clothing. and they love him right back. It was nearly impossible to shoot on the bridge behind his store without someone stopping to say, “hello.”

i had the pleasure of meeting sid one time away from his store.  he was meeting with a buddy of mine that i had run into at a coffee shop.  he recognized we were into our conversation and asked what we were talking about.  my friend told him we were grading our fantasy football draft.  sid got real excited and started asking about our teams.  i felt bad for cutting into their meeting time, but sid was legitimately interested.  he’s a genuine dude and jake’s test shot captures his personality perfectly.  thanks for sharing, jake.

new tretorn nylite colorways at sid mashburn

while doing some online shopping at sid’s tonight, i noticed they added a few new tretorn nylite colorways to their arsenal.  the navy/red have my name all over them.  if you’ve been waiting to jump on the tretorn nylite bandwagon, it’s time to get on board.  these are perfect shoes for the spring and summer.  you can find all three colors at sidmashburn.com.

nyc work trip

i’m headed to new york tomorrow for a quick work trip.  i’ll be back on wednesday, so i’m packing light.  most of these items you’ve already seen on to take the train, but they’re worth mentioning again.  here’s what i’m wearing/packing for nyc:

brooks brothers navy fitzgerald two button suit – current my favorite suit that i own.

sid mashburn fox tie – a christmas gift that needs to be worn.  no time like the present.

sid mashburn button down shirt – i never leave home without a white button down.

tie bar from the tie bar – great entry point to the tie bar game.  can’t beat their prices.

gucci horsebit loafers – classic 1980s wall street.  these will be occupying my feet.

filson small duffle – the perfect overnight bag.  hands down.

i’m going to try to do a little shopping while i’m up there, but i’m not sure what kind of time i’m going to have.  i hope to come back with a good post and maybe some new kicks.
