guys, it’s almost beach time.  i’m headed to the promised land (30a beaches) in 2 months which means i have 2 months (duh) to get my fat ass in shape.  i’m probably one of the last people you should listen to when it comes to fitness advice – mainly because i can’t quit eating pancakes and drinking miller lite – but i have dropped 30 lbs since i got divorced and i feel f’ing great.  i’m going to go ahead and insert the “read more” tab, so if you’re interested in reading about what you can do to get in above average shape, read on.    Continue reading

mcqueen on set

mscquuenonset2.1

this picture needs no explanation.  there was no one cooler than steve mcqueen.  few guys can pull off the white v-neck t-shirt quite like mcqueen did in between takes on the set of bullitt.  but, hey, if you want to try, here’s a good starting point:

steve mcqueen style: world war II service boots

like many #menswear bloggers, steve mcqueen was a major influence on my current obsession with personal style.  my first introduction to him came from his film the great escape.  a friend of mine told me he wore desert boots in the film, so i went to clarks and bought some desert boots.  it wasn’t until watching the film a second time that i realized his boots looked nothing like my clarks.  i went to the internet for answers and discovered that mcqueen’s boots in the great escape were world war ii service boots and not desert boots.  i spent the next several hours back on the internet looking for anything that resembled wwii service boots.  i found nothing…until now.  l.l. bean signature has recently released their very own version of the classic boot made with roughed out leather and a rubber soul.  they look pretty damn close to the boots in the picture above if you ask me.  time to put on your persols, fire up your triumph tr6 650, and make your own great escape (sorry i couldn’t resist).

if you’re looking for more information on some of mqueen’s other footwear choices, see my previous post on his playboy boots here.

baractua: coming soon to a theater near you

hollywood’s had a long standing relationship with the baracuta harrington jacket dating back to elvis in the movie king creole in 1958.  since then, hollywood has reintroduced the jacket from generation to generation.  in the 1960’s, steve mcqueen made the jacket legendary in the thomas crown affair.  in the 80’s, michael keaton wore one in mr. mom, and a few years later, clark kent (christopher reeve) used the jacket to hide his real identity as superman in the film of the same name.  it’s been 20+ years since those films and the time for reintroduction is apparently now.

most fashion savvy bloggers have had their baracuta ever since they discovered steve mcqueen and bought their first pair of desert boots, but the rest of the population hasn’t quite caught on.  that might not be the case after this fall.  i’m starting to see an uptick in the coverage the jacket is getting on our tv and movie screens.  i noticed one earlier this year in the hangover part 2.  i’ve also seen it in previews for the new season of bored to death and the upcoming blockbuster killer elite.  no matter where you see it this fall, it’s still as classic and iconic as it’s ever been.  i’d say welcome back, but it hasn’t really gone anywhere.

free & easy: how to be a rugged man

my new copy of free & easy just arrived at my office.  this month’s issue is “how to be a rugged man.”  it might be easier to learn how to be a rugged man if i could read japanese, but that won’t stop me from enjoying the pictures.  obviously you can’t have a “how to be a rugged man” issue of anything without steve mcqueen.  here are a few pages that caught my eye upon first skim-through (be sure to click read more).

next up: persol 649

i’ve owned one pair of persol sunglasses in my lifetime.  i bought them on my honeymoon around this time last summer.  we were in st. barts and i had a little extra cash per a wedding gift.  they were bit big for my face, but i didn’t really mind.  i went with the 714 model.  the ones that look exactly like the picture above but fold in the middle.  at first, the folding didn’t bother me.  i thought it looked cool.  i could take them off and put them in my front pocket.  after a month, the folding became a hassle.  every time i took them off they would self-fold and when i tightened the screw they became difficult to fold.  even the folds on the sides of the sunglasses would steal a hair or two if i wasn’t careful taking them off.  i sold them on ebay for about what i paid for them (nice to know they don’t lose too much value if you make a mistake).  i’ve been meaning to replace them with the 649 model (above) ever since.  now is the time.  i realize folding sunglasses are making a comeback (see new ray-ban wayfarers), but count me out on this one.  they’re not worth the trouble.

the baracuta g9 slim fit jacket

today one of my friends offered me his old baracuta jacket.  he had outgrown it and needed a bigger size.  i tried it on and unfortunately it’s slightly too big.  unzipped it might have worked, but zipped the sides poke out too much.  i’m not super skinny but i definitely like a snug fit when it comes to jackets.  this got me thinking: it’s finally time to buy one of these damn things.  they’re pretty much essential to a man’s closet.  i guess i need to stop buying so many pairs of boots.  check out mcqueen in his:

if you’re looking for a cheaper model, check out polo’s version here.  i’ve seen these in person.  they look good too.

setting the record straight: mcqueen’s footwear

i realize steve mcqueen’s boots have been covered ad nauseum in the blogosphere, but the photo above made me check my facts again.  you often hear people say that mcqueen wore clarks desert boots in the great escape.  not true.  he actually wore m-43 service boots like the ones pictured below (click read more).  Continue reading

barbour 75th anniversary steve mcqueen collection

i’ve seen a couple of pieces from the new steve mcqueen collection and i’m unimpressed.  i think calling it the “steve mcqueen collection” takes away from the mystique of the jacket and the brand.  i’d rather go ahead and just buy the original international jacket which i’m sure is cheaper.

here’s the original jacket without the obnoxious picture on the inside:

steve mcqueen persol sunglasses

i’ve avoided it for as long as i possibly could, but it’s time to say something about the persol steve mcqueen 714s.  anyone that has any sort of a style conscious knows steve mcqueen’s affect on men’s style and/or men’s style blogs.  he’s probably the reason i started paying attention to how i looked after college in the first place.  now persol has teamed with sunglass hut to offer a special edition of 714s with steve mcqueen’s name etched on the sides.  i’m not really sure why they felt the need to make this a “special edition” since 714s were readily available, but i’ll take it.  i bought a pair of black 714s on my honeymoon but sold them on ebay shortly after because i got sick of the folding.  now that these are available i might have to purchase as a collectors item.  you can never have too many pairs of sunglasses imo.
