retrosuperfuture for a.p.c. sunglasses

apcsunglasses

summer hasn’t technically arrived (we’ll have to wait until June 21st to make it official), but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be working on your shades game.  my recommendation – in addition to the usual wayfarerers, clubmasters, etc. – is this pair of retrosuperfuture for a.p.c. sunglasses.  there really isn’t much to them except they’re handmade in italy for everyone’s favorite french denim brand.  who’s feeling like a trip to europe all of a sudden?  *raises hand*

mcqueen on set

mscquuenonset2.1

this picture needs no explanation.  there was no one cooler than steve mcqueen.  few guys can pull off the white v-neck t-shirt quite like mcqueen did in between takes on the set of bullitt.  but, hey, if you want to try, here’s a good starting point:

i haven’t updated my sunglasses in at least 2 years.  i’ve found a ton i like online, but sunglasses are one of those things you want to buy in person, so you can awkwardly make “cool” faces in the tiny store mirror (that was a joke by the way).  i’m embarrassed to say i spent more than hour trying to find a new pair of sunglasses today.  i started by googling this picture.  cary grant’s tart optical “arnel” shades in north by northwest are thing of perfection.  sadly, i was too lazy to call the store to check the price, so i went to warby parker’s website and did the virtual try-on.  i soon discovered the virtual try-on looks a lot better for reading glasses, because every pair of sunglasses i tried on made me look like doc ock from spider-man.  my next stop was j.crew’s accessory section, but most of the shades were too ray-ban or too expensive.  i was running out of options until i remembered sid mashburn started carrying allyn scura sunglasses sometime last year.  score.  after a ton of back and forth between grey and dark tortoise, i settled on the gray beauts you see below.  i can’t wait to rock these at the beach this july 4th.  ladies, holla at me.

for the summer: plastic aviators

i buy a new pair of sunglasses almost every summer.  i now have 5 or 6 pairs that i rotate on a weekly basis.  it keeps things fresh.  this summer i’ve got my eye on some plastic aviators like paul newman used to wear.  i’m not sure who made his exact shades, but ray-ban offers something just as close and probably half the price.  if you haven’t purchased a pair of sunglasses in a year or two, it’s time to treat yourself to some new shades.  you deserve it.

ray-ban cats 5000 (they sound futuristic don’t they):

while you were out featuring j. crew

i’ve been slammed at work for the past two days and haven’t been able to post or read any of my favorite blogs.  while i was out, j. crew has been busy adding some new things to their store.  let’s take a look.

timex andros watch – in most cases i would be opposed to paying $150 for something that costs considerably less to make, but this watch looks impressive.

limited edition alden black alpine longwing bluchers – these bluchers are handcrafted in horween’s chromexcel pebbled leather and then hand stained and polished.  better act fast.

quoddy tri-color chukka boots – i’m embarrassed to say i don’t own anything made by quoddy.  these would be a good starting point.

red wing 2904 – j. crew, please stop doing red wing collaborations.  it’s killing my wallet.  red wing experts correct me if i’m wrong but i believe this model was conceived entirely by j. crew.  i’ve never seen it or heard of it before.

new balance 1400 sneakers – i know i talk about these ad nauseum but i really like this new military grey color.

persol aviator sunglasses – aviators never go out of style.  invest accordingly.

warby parker sunglasses

warby parker sunglasses are finally here.  there have been rumblings of their existence for quite sometime.  if you’re not keen on warby parker, it’s time to get educated.  i mentioned them back in march when i bought my first pair of frames.  i absolutely love them.  5 out of 5 stars if we had to go there.  i even convinced my wife to buy some.  on our trip to the beach last month, three people in the airport told her they liked her glasses (i’m sure they would have liked mine, but i wasn’t wearing them at the time).  moving right along…the sunglasses are now available on their site for pre-order.  they’ll run you a cool $95 polarized.  you read that correctly: i said polarized.  that’s an insane price for this kind of quality.  plus, when you buy a pair, wp donates a pair to a person in need.  incredible.  now go buy some sunglasses.

style icon: bob dylan

bob dylan turned 70 last week.  i consider myself lucky that he’s been alive for the 30 years i’ve been living.  i’ve seen him in concert 3 times now which doesn’t sound that impressive, but the circumstances surrounding each show i’ve been to would make a fascinating song.  he is the greatest songwriter of all time.  if you don’t believe me, go pick up a copy of the new rolling stone and read the other music legends discussing his tunes.  i got goosebumps.  not only is he a music icon, but his style – especially the early days – is something to aspire to.  i love the denim and flannels he wore when he was starting out, but my favorite dylan look is the black blazer, skinny jeans, wayfarer sunglasses, and chelsea boots he wore after he plugged in his guitar.  if i was in a band, you would have no problem guessing who i stole my look from.  click the next page to see more pics of the music and style icon.  Continue reading

sunglasses rotation

the other day someone at my office asked if i had on new sunglasses.  i told him they were not new and that i had a couple of pairs that i rotate depending on the mood i’m in.  he looked at me at a little funny.  i’m not sure why.  i think sunglasses are an essential piece of anybody’s wardrobe.  i get bored easily, so it’s nice to change it up from time to time.  one of my pet peeves is when people tell me they buy cheap sunglasses because they think they’ll lose them.  hogwash.  buy yourself a nice pair and take care of them.  i don’t mean blow your whole paycheck.  get you a nice pair of ray-bans.  they won’t set you back too much.  i tend to stick to styles that i know won’t go out of style like wayfarers or aviators.  my sunglasses rotation for the spring and summer from top to bottom:

ray-ban wayfarer (black)

ray-ban wayfarer (tortoise)

ray-ban clubmaster

ray-ban caravan

this post is not sponsored by ray-ban, but i wish it was.  i like ray-bans because they fit my face better than other brands and they’re easy to find.

perfect shades

the sun just came out in nashville, so it’s time to start thinking about sunglasses.  i’ve always fancied myself a ray-ban man, but it never hurts to add a couple of different pairs to your rotation.  i love moscot eye-wear.   they’re a new york based company that have been around for over 100 years.  they’re big on customer service.  i know this because i visited their store last spring.  a buddy of mine took them a pair of broken sunglasses and they fixed them in a couple of hours.  they even kept the store open late so he could pick them up.  a lot of people buy cheap sunglasses.  stop doing that.  buy them from moscot and take good care of them, because moscot will take good care of you.  two of my favorites are the nebb (top pic) and the lemtosh (below).

ray-ban high street sunglasses

want to get a jump on the next sunglasses trend?  i’m thinking the ray-ban high street sunglasses will be everywhere this summer.  they’re a slight deviation from the wayfarers we all know and love, but equally as sharp.  i will be purchasing a pair this winter.
