they’re baaaaaaack

birk_boston

i don’t know how it happened.  i don’t know why it happened, but it happened.  birkenstocks are back.  they crept their way onto the runway 2 years ago and i laughed in the face of fashion designers all over the world (not true – more like i laughed at my computer screen in the face of no one).  (please note: i do not follow fashion designers or runway shows; however, i do occasionally follow some trends.)

i don’t like sandals.  feet gross me out.  i will wear flip-flops at the beach, but that’s out of necessity.  from the looks of those around me, i believe i am in the minority.  flip-flops are a staple in the everyman warm weather wardrobe.  i’ve learned to accept it.  i just don’t look down when the temperature is above 65.

a couple of months ago, esquire tweeted a link to an article called “four steps to getting birkenstocks right.”  i had a small panic attack.  is this really happening?  i thought for sure the trend would remain on runways like skirts for men.  and now here i am 3 months later considering buying a pair of birkenstocks (not the sandal kind).

i had a pair of bostons like the ones you see above.  i bought them in high school, wore them in college, and then retired them to the same place i put my old phish bootlegs (hint: the trash).  if – and that’s a big if – i were actually going to purchase a pair of birkenstocks and wear them in public, i would make sure they were the boston model.  i would also tell everyone i bought them for comfort and didn’t care how they looked (total lie).  and if you’re considering buying a pair, you can get them at unionmade which is where i stole this picture (thanks, guys!).

red wing pecos boots 8866

good news for red wing fans!  for a limited time (or until they run out of their 48 pairs), the red wing pecos 8866 boots in oro russet are now available at unionmade in san fran.  up until now, they’ve only been available in japan, so if you want some you better move fast.  i believe the last the pecos boots are made on fits true to size, but i will confirm and update accordingly.

beams+ makes it to the states

if you’ve been paying attention, then i’m sure you already know all about beams+.  i mentioned them here last year when they collaborated with alden.  they’re a japanese brand and have been hard to find in the states.  good news!  unionmade in san fran has added beams+ to their store & online.  here are a couple of my favorites to get you ready for the fall.

head over to their site to check out the full selection.

essential: the gray sweatshirt

whether you have a gray, navy or faded black one, a good sweatshirt is something you should own.  growing up, my favorite sweatshirts were the gray ones that spelled out the name of a college on the front.  the more you washed those, the better they looked.  now designers are making throwbacks to the original sweatshirts you’d see on style icons steve mcqueen and paul newman (below).  check out two affordable options at j. crew and unionmade.  be sure to order two in case your wife of girlfriend steals one of them.

needed: varsity jacket

a couple of weeks ago i commented that i really liked gant rugger’s baseball jacket for the fall.  the only thing preventing me from purchasing it is finding it.  i don’t think it’s sold online (i could be wrong) and i’m not planning on going to new york quick enough to snag one before they’re all gone.  thanks to sartorially inclined i have found another jacket i like just as much.  it’s made by unionmade and i can go ahead and purchase online.  problem solved.
