weekly six pack vol 8

my apologies for not posting the weekly six pack on friday.  better late than never though, right?  the only release worth noting last week was cee lo green’s new album the lady killer.  i dig it but i’m not all over it like everyone else.  i do love the cover of “no one’s gonna love you.”  download that one today.  the next two tracks were influenced by the cma awards.  i was fortunate to go on wednesday and surprisingly had a blast.  major shout of to blake shelton for winning male vocalist of the year.  speaking of blake, miranda lambert’s album revolution is one you should already own.  the song after blake’s is “as she’s walking away” by the zac brown band.  “baby i’m yours” by breakbot is from the video a couple of posts below.  the video might not be my favorite but the song is catchy.  “chain heavy” from kanye west is the free download of the week.  it’s q-tip produced and heavy.  the last track from joanna newsom is in a commercial right now.  i have no idea what the commercial is but it sounds like it should have been in the wild things movie.

weekly six pack vol 6

i figured i’d sneak my weekly six pack in here before time ran out.  “popular” is a song from lil wayne’s new album i am not a human being. i love the hook and there’s also a line about chris johnson.  i put another avett brother’s tune in the six pack because we were supposed to go see them last night.  i’ve heard mixed reviews on the show, so i’m not too upset we missed it.  the third song by the dodo’s is called “fables.”  a friend of mine brought a boombox to the golf course last weekend and it came on his ipod.  i forgot how good it was.  “you’re gonna kill that girl” by the ramones would be on any halloween playlist i would make.  “magdalena” is a tune off of brandon flowers new record.  i know a million reasons why i shouldn’t like his music, but who cares.  the last track is “mine” from taylor swift.  her new record is good.  i’m not kidding.  if you don’t believe then check out the new rolling stone.  4 stars.  seriously.

weekly six pack vol 5

sorry the six pack is coming a little late today.  i almost forgot about it.  i’ve been listening to the new kings of leon album so much this week that i had a hard time coming up with anything that’s not on come around sundown.  i realize liking the kings might hurt my cool factor, but i stand by them.  the first two tracks are two of my favorites from an album that deserves all 4 of the stars rolling stone gave it.  the third track is from the clash’s under-appreciated album combat rock. it’s also the song m.i.a. used as a sample for “paper planes.”  it’s an especially great song if you’re stuck in traffic.  can’t explain it but it’s true.  the list gets progressively wussier as you go down.  “julie” from jens lekman is one of my go-to jens tracks.  if you don’t know who he is go check out this track and “black cab.”  the 5th song on the list is from belle and sebastian featuring norah jones.  coffee shop rock it is.  the last song is one you’ve probably heard a billion times – john mayer featuring taylor swift “half of my heart.”  it’s a great pop song.  that’s what john mayer does.  he writes pop songs better than anyone.  i wanted taylor swift in the mix this week because i ran into her on sunday night.  she’s much prettier in person than she is in pictures.

weekly six pack vol 4

tough week for the ol’ boy.  i’m ready for the weekend.  not a lot of new stuff on here.  i bought the new sufjan stevens record for $3 on  i dig “futile devices” but am having trouble with the rest of it (as usual).  i can’t seem to turn off pet sounds.  i find something new in that album every time i put it on.  whiskeytown’s “pawn shop ain’t no place for a wedding ring” came on shuffle yesterday and i had forgotten how brilliant their straight-up country was.  the local natives played here last night and missed it like a friggin’ idiot.  “strawberry letter 23” is something that should be on everyone’s ipod.  it’s one of those songs you know you’ve heard but can’t remember where.  i’ve also been listening to a lot of norah jones’ latest album this week.  her version of “jesus, etc.” is spot on.  that’s it for the weekly sixer.

weekly six pack vol 3

the weekly six pack is national heavy this week after seeing them last sunday night.  “mr. november” is a classic and sneakily one of my top 50 favorite songs of all time.  “90-mile water wall” is a bit obscure off of sad songs for dirty lovers and the other two are off the new album high violet. the avett brothers released an excellent live album this past week which is why i chose “murder in the city.”  the last song “you! me! dancing!” by los campesinos! is in the budweiser / mlb playoff commercial.  it’s just the intro in the ad but gets me fired up none-the-less.

weekly six pack volume two

as promised this week’s weekly six pack.  you’re probably thinking two kanye songs two weeks in a row.  well, i can’t help it.  dude’s on fire right now.  the hook of this song might be one of my favorites: “the sh*t is f**king ridiculous.”  as far as the other selections are concerned, let me explain: i’m going to see the national this sunday night;  passion pit is coming at the end of the month; jenny and johnny were in town last week; the chromeo tune is just plain good; and eli “paperboy” reed sounds like old school soul.  done.

weekly six pack vol 1

each week i’m going to feature a weekly “6 pack” (not the first time this has been used) of songs that are on heavy rotation in my car or office.  above is the first entry.  you probably won’t agree with everything i post and i don’t expect you to, but i hope every now and again you find one song or artist that will make it into your rotation.  enjoy.
