essential: the fitted white dress shirt

Picture No. 10643448

i’m a bit of a francophile.  ever since going to paris in 2014, i’ve had an affinity for all things french including their style.  the other day, i was reading a blog post on how men in paris dress and the female who wrote the piece was discussing the appeal of the fitted white dress shirt.  she claimed that it could make any man look sexy.  duly noted.  she also mentioned leaving the top 2 buttons unbottoned (very european).  it got me thinking that a fitted white dress shirt is an essential piece to every man’s wardrobe.

i realize alex turner (above) is not french, but he’s from the uk and pulls off this look flawlessly.  honestly, most of us average dudes could rock this look (minus the oversized belt buckle of course).  the good news is that you can probably find a good quality fitted white dress shirt wherever you shop (j. crew, sid mashburn, ralph lauren, uniqlo, etc.).  i’m a big fan of the shirt below from french brand apc.  i guess that’s not really surprising given how i started this post.

mcqueen on set

this picture needs no explanation.  there was no one cooler than steve mcqueen.  few guys can pull off the white v-neck t-shirt quite like mcqueen did in between takes on the set of bullitt.  but, hey, if you want to try, here’s a good starting point:

summer scent: lacoste white

on a recent guy’s trip, a friend of mine noticed my cologne in the bathroom and asked me why the hell i used it.  it struck me as an odd thing to ask about.  i thought cologne was something that all men used.  i’m not embarrassed to admit that when i reached my teenage years, i applied cologne liberally thinking that women would smell me from a far and fall in love instantly.  i soon found out that a lot of cologne does not in fact attract women, but instead repels them.  glad i learned this lesson early in life.

i like the way cologne smells and have been looking for a signature scent for the last several years.  i tend to buy the travel sizes so i don’t have to invest in one long term.  last fall, i made the executive decision to go old school ralph lauren in the cold months (the green bottle your dad probably wore – more on this later in the year).  with that said, i want something a little lighter in the warmer months.  i’ve been experimenting with a few different brands and finally found something i love: lacoste white.  i’m not going to try and describe how it smells, because i would most likely sound like a complete douche.  all i know is that it smells like summer and that’s good enough for me.  treat yourself to a bottle.  your lady will thank you.

late to the party

at the end of june i bought a pair of the navy waxed nylite tretorns.  i liked ’em so much that i had to grab a pair of the white ones.  i tried to order them in july, but they were sold out everywhere (blogger tipping point i guess).  zappos reloaded and i pulled the trigger.  i figured i’d start my own little nylite project since i wasn’t invited to their party.  currently i’m the only guest, but that’s ok.  you’re invited too.  i love these shoes.  their inexpensive, comfortable, and look great.

last tretorn post until next summer i promise.

white authentics with leather laces

i apologize for the lack of posts lately.  my internet at work has been a bit messed up.  i need to start auto-posting the night before so i can keep up.  i’ve got a lot of good stuff planned for the next couple of weeks.

with spring right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about new kicks.  my favorite spring/summer shoe is either the vans slip-on or the authentic (above).  i’ve always gone with black, gray or navy when buying either shoe, but this spring i’m going to branch out and get white authentics.

white shoes are a tricky thing to pull off.  you don’t want to look too hip hop or like you’re trying too hard to look cool.  the break in period usually consists off some ridicule from your friends, wife or girlfriend.  fear not.  give them some character by adding leather laces to the equation.  the white laces don’t do the shoes any favors.  i stole this idea from ryan at [you have broken the internet].  here are a shot of his authentics:
