who says you can’t wear loafers with a suit?  sure as hell not michael caine.  in fact, i couldn’t find a picture of him not wearing loafers (and few without a cigarette in his mouth).  if you’re a suit-and-tie to work kind of guy, then michael caine is your style muse.  his suits were tailored to perfection by the late great english tailor doug hayward.  hayward tailored his customers suits to savile row standards, but with the relaxed aesthetic of italian design.  caine finished the look with thick rimmed glasses, a thin tie and a cigarette.  it worked as caine is often regarded as one of the most stylish men on and off the silver screen.  and if you haven’t seen caine do work in get carter, do yourself a favor and rent it this weekend.  it’s a classic.

holiday gift idea: penfield sanford bobble beanie

in case you haven’t noticed, i’m a big penfield fan.  they make some great stuff like this sanford bobbled beanie.  if you know someone headed skiing over the holidays, this hat would make a perfect gift.

cold weather running gear

now that college football is over it’s time to get my ass off the couch and start running again.  running on the treadmill is great, but you can’t beat the great outdoors – even when it’s freezing outside.  here’s what you’ll need to stay warm running this winter:

new balance windblocker jacket: it’s windproof, waterproof, and made with lightning dry fabric that will help wick away the moisture.

under armour cold gear compression shirt: like long underwear but tighter and warmer.

nike wool running hat: you’ll need something to cover your head and ears like this dri-fit wool running hat from nike.

drymax cold weather running socks: drymax are my favorite running socks.  their cold weather socks have a dual layer moisture removal system that instantly moves moisture from the skin.

under armour compression leggings: the best protection for your legs in cold weather.  i’ll usually throw on a pair of shorts over them, so no one has to look at my junk.

nike lightweight running gloves: you can’t forget about your hands when running in cold weather.  plus, ladies don’t like men with chaffed hands.

asics gt-2160 running shoes: my new favorite running shoes.  they’re the perfect mix of stability and comfort.

now all you’ve got to do is find the time to get started.  good luck!

mackinaw cruiser vs the irvine jacket

the new j. crew catalog arrived sometime last week.  thumbing through it i noticed a jacket eerily similar to the filson mackinaw cruiser.  j. crew is calling it the irvine jacket (bottom pic).  it’s essentially the exact same jacket as filson’s.  it’s wool with chest flap pockets, handwarmer pockets, and buttons at the cuff.  it doesn’t look half bad, but i’d still go for the mackinaw cruiser.  filson’s been making their jacket since 1914;  j. crew since 2011.  no contest here.
