the sid mashburn navy blazer

navy-blue-blazer_01

sid mashburn’s email campaign is a cut above the rest (which is not surprising in the least bit).  a couple of weeks ago, he sent out an email on the navy blazer.  if you clicked on the link, it takes you to a page that goes into great detail regarding the fabric, the cut and the construction of this timeless jacket.  there’s also an 8 minute video of sid discussing the importance of the navy blazer.  he calls it “every man’s coat.”  i tend to agree.  if you don’t have a go-to navy blazer in your closet, then you need to save your nickels and dimes and go pick up one up.  holiday party season is coming.  why not impress your friends and the ladies by showing up in a new tailored navy blazer.

here again is the link to sid’s page.  it’s worth checking out.  trust me.  at the bottom of the page he has several pictures of when and how to wear the navy blazer (example below).  excellent work.

don draper’s bomber jacket

draperbomber

mad men ends tonight.  it’s hard to believe.  i don’t watch a lot of tv, but it’s one that i’ve followed since the beginning.  i caught up on last week’s episode on my plane ride this morning.  the style highlight for me was don’s navy bomber jacket.  gq mentioned it earlier this week, but i’m not about to spend $429 on a bomber jacket i’ll wear a handful of times.  if you’re looking for a similar jacket at a fraction of the price, look no further than topman.  now all you need is a dope pair of aviators and some pomade and you will look just like retired don draper (not really but it will be a valiant effort).

superga classics

superga1

the first time i saw a pair of superga sneakers i was in 8th grade.  one of my friends had invited a french exchange student to live with her for a few months and these were the only shoes she packed.  i thought they were some of the most heinous sneakers i had ever seen – which means they were destined to be cool 15 years later.  honestly, they’re probably still not “cool,” but I’m not worried about it.  they’re incredibly comfortable, easy on the wallet and you can throw them in the washing machine when they start to stink.  who knows maybe i won’t look like a tourist when i finally book that trip to europe.  you can buy your very own here.

mcqueen on set

mscquuenonset2.1

this picture needs no explanation.  there was no one cooler than steve mcqueen.  few guys can pull off the white v-neck t-shirt quite like mcqueen did in between takes on the set of bullitt.  but, hey, if you want to try, here’s a good starting point:

wedding season is upon us.  most of the weddings i’ve been invited to this spring are black tie events.  honestly, i prefer a black tie wedding as long as it’s not at the beach (duh!).  it’s nice to have an excuse to wear a tux.  if you’re thinking about purchasing a new tux this spring, let me recommend going with a navy or midnight blue number like this one from j. crew.  it will be a refreshing change to the all of the other penguin suits you on a formal saturday night.

alden for j. crew navy longwings

hat tip to jeremiah at a head long dive for the heads up on these alden for j. crew navy longwings and also for this:

can i be honest with you? whew (*wipes hand across forehead), great. i’m sick and tired of pontificating about shit like goodyear welts, full-leather lining and tempered steel shanks, so whether or not you give a baker’s fuck, let’s just agree that all those details and craftsmanship are valuable, comes with all alden footwear and move on.

lmao (i have never typed that, but felt it necessary in this situation).  thank you for saying what needed to be said (for reference see here).  i can’t remember which collaborator had some navy longwings last fall, but i missed the boat and have been looking for a pair ever since.  if i can set aside some cash, i will hopefully make these babies mine sometime in the next month or two, but we all know i stink at saving money, so we’ll see how this goes.

black and blue

my 3 year old barbour bedale is one of my favorite possessions.  i haven’t seen or worn a jacket that comes anywhere close to it.  i’m headed to new york next week and it’s the only jacket i’m going to take with me.  my only problem with the bedale is that everyone loves the sage color.  i had dinner with some friends last weekend and 3 of us were wearing the exact same jacket.  this is not a new problem.  i mentioned nashville’s growing barbour population around this time last year (see this post).  i even tried to find an alternative, but i couldn’t find anything i like as much as my barbour.  so what’s a blogger to do?  i’ve decided to get another color.  i know i should probably abandon barbour all together and look for another brand, but i can’t.  i just can’t.  it’s my go-to coat.  i’m thinking about either the black or the navy.  which one do you think i should go with?

tretorns have arrived

my “blogger shoes” as paul would call them arrived yesterday.  i apologize for doubling up on the tretorn talk this week, but i figured my new kicks were worth the time.  if you’re on the fence about buying some, do it.  you’ll love them.  they’re light weight and comfortable.  my only knock on them would be that they run narrow (length runs true to size).  as you can see the navy color waxed canvas looks exceptional.  i wore them for 5 hours last night and didn’t want to take them off.  i think i’m going to order a white pair too.

walk over shoes

while doing my usual blog recon this morning, i stumbled upon walk over shoes and some wonderful looking bucks.  immediately the navy bucks with the red brick soles caught my attention.  the buck game has been dominated by mark mcnairy, but i’ve never clicked buy because i didn’t feel comfortable with the price point.  walk over shoes is not a new company, but their online store is new today from what i understand.  please head over to walk over and check out their inventory.  classic looking shoes at a nice price.  they’re not cheap by any means, but definitely affordable and definitely great looking.

all navy everything

two of my favorite items on earth are my barbour bedale and my bean boots.  when i was in nyc last weekend, i stopped by the barbour store in soho and fell in love with the navy bedale.  i don’t know if i’m sick of my green one or just wanting something new, but i really dig it.

i also like the navy waxed canvas bean boots from l.l. bean’s signature line.  yesterday i saw pics of them on a couple of different blogs i read and thought it might be fate telling me i needed some.

obviously navy is not a new color, but i’m starting to see it more as an option for products i like.  one might worry that navy doesn’t look good with jeans, but i disagree completely.  i think you can wear jeans with anything.  not scared of denim on denim either.
